Doctor Who: Beginning Collection is a great place to start to become a fan

There are three stories in this great boxset: An Unearthly Child, The Daleks, and the Edge of Destruction.

An Unearthly Child is how Doctor Who all begins, it is the very first episode of the whole series starring William Hartnell as The Doctor. It originally aired in November 1963 the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The story introduces Ian and Barbara, two teachers who are worried about a student named Susan. When the teachers follow Susan home to a junkyard, they grow increasingly alarmed and on entering into the junkyard Susan has mysteriously disappeared. Only junk and a strange police box are all that are in the junkyard. When a crotchety old man appears in the junkyard and is seen heading towards the police box, both Ian and Barbara approach him asking for his help in finding Susan, but the old man refuses. Suddenly a sound is heard from the box...Susan's voice. Barbara and Ian break into the police box and find themselves in the Tardis - a spaceship that travels through time and space. The old man is Susan's Grandfather called the Doctor. Unwilling to let the teachers leave, the Doctor sets the spaceship running and takes the four travellers into earth's far distant past. An Unearthly Child lasts four episodes and is approx. 95 minutes. It is chuck full of extras: The original Pilot episode is included which was redone when the show was actually aired on TV to tone down how crotchety the Doctor was. Also included is the pilot 40-minute unedited studio recording (basically the pilot episode before all the flaws were taking out). Included is commentary; Doctor Who theme in 5.1 surround sound; Comedy sketches; photo gallery; and information text that goes with each episode.

    A Legend Begins

The early episodes of Dr. Who probably won't excite people who don't like the show already, but for those who do, they're great. Particularly fun for me are the inclusion of both versions of the pilot episode, the realization that the Doctor's greatest enemy (or at least one of the greatest) showed up in the second story the show told, and the avant garde theatricality of the third story. Not only are the stories interesting in their own right (and here I'm speaking about the show as a whole, down through the decades); they also provide a continuous document of the development of science fiction television and storytelling ideas in the UK.

    Beginning the Long Voyage

The very first Doctor Who adventures were filmed on a less-than-a-shoestring budget back in 1963. Regardless, the boundless creativity of the show's creators and the charm of William Hartnell as the first Doctor is what makes the show such a winner. The "Beginning Collection" is limited to a few famous story arcs (the first appearance of the infamous Daleks, in particular), all of which are classics. These are the journeys that set the TARDIS in motion for 45 years and counting.
    Brilliant.

    WOAH

I started Doctor Who in 2011. I wathced them on Netflix and the farthest it went back was 2005 with Cristopher Eccleston and Rose.
The show is imaginitive and keeps the watchers attention. Also they put an alien twist on historical events like Mt. Vesusvius erupting and the disappearence of Agatha Christie. I think it is a great show for all ages.
