Successful feature-film actor Christopher Eccleston is terrific as Doctor Who, the immortal Time Lord who travels in the TARDIS Time and Relative Dimensions in Space, a space-time traveling machine in the guise of a police box, and assumes various human forms during his lengthy crusade against alien evildoers. Eccleston brings verve and wit to the role while remaining just serious enough to make the heroics convincing. This 13-episode season begins with "Rose," as the Doctor returns to present-day London to rescue department-store clerk Rose Tyler erstwhile pop star Billie Piper from an advance guard of malevolent Autons plotting an invasion of Earth. She decides to accompany the good Doctor on his subsequent forays; in the third episode, "The Unquiet Dead," she zips back to 1869 and gets to meet Charles Dickens played with tongue in cheek by veteran character actor Simon Callow. For a two-parter that represents the season at its best, the Time Lord and his female companion revisit London during the Blitz in "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances." This exciting yarn introduces John Barrowman as the dashing Captain Jack Harkness, who emerges as a secondary hero with unusual flair -- and will go on to star in the first Who spin-off, Torchwood.     I must admit, I only watched the first season of Doctor Who so I would be better prepared to watch and drool at Second Series Doctor David Tennant. However, when it came time to say goodbye to Christopher Eccleston, I was really saddened, and a little reluctant to embrace David Tennant. I am a newcomer to Doctor Who-I have since watched several of the Tom Baker episodes but, but this was my first exposure to the series. I loved it, and watched all the episodes in about three days-trying to pace myself. Christopher Eccleston was a great Doctor, managing to play things lightly but convey very real pathos and anger when the situation called for it. He played the role serious enough to make the outlandish situations convincing. Billie Piper was great fun as Rose, and I loved the chemistry the two of them have together-their witty banter is absolutely great! Although the series has some weaker episodes "The Slaveen two-parter, for example", the series also gives us "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances", two of the creepiest and most compelling episodes of the series so far "until series's three's Blink, anyway". The two-part finale involving enemies from the earlier Doctor Who lore, also, stands among the best of the series. Eccleston and Piper make this two-parter very emotionally satisfying and moving. I have continued to watch Doctor Who. I now love David Tennant as much as I did Christopher Eccleston. However, it was hard to come to terms with his absence for a few of Series Two's episodes. Ah well, at least I have the first season on DVD if I ever need to wax nostalgic about the ninth Time Lord.

    If you're a fan of the Doctor you'll love the new series as well. New technology adds to the visual enjoyment. Exceptional scriptwritng has kept the camp of the original series; while updating the series to fit in now. Great pairing of Eccelston and Piper for thoroughly enjoyable viewing.

    Vintage Doctor Who - Best it yet to Comw

    I have been a fan and watching Doctor Who for 25 years. This series 1 has been far the best Doctor Who yet. Keeping true to its story line yet bringing it into th 21st century. The relationship between the Doctor and Rose is perfect. They need each other and work well together. The Tardis has been updated and the special effects all have been updated. I look forward to purchasing Series 2 and follow its story line.

    Brilliant reboot of classic series

    Continuing the trend of grittier and darker reboots of classic stories (for instance the recent Batman reboot by director Christopher Nolan) Doctor Who gets an updated remake with modern special effects and solid writing. Removing the "eccentric" trappings of earlier Doctors with foppish sartorial flair, this Doctor wears a black leather jacket and looks like he could beat you up in a back alley - quite the departure from previous Doctors who were typically elderly english professor types. In addition to paying homage to what made the series such a hit (sense of humor, cleaver re-use of historical fact, the ever so prevalent chase scenes down dark corridors) the series addresses the love felt between doctor and assistant more pointedly as here they're closer in age and have less of the creepy father/daughter bent with previous incarnations of the series. We also get a great story arc as each episode contains clues to a series long mystery while the characters deal with the mystery within each individual episode. Just what does "Bad Wolf" written on walls in every episode mean? You'll just have to watch and see!

    2nd Greatest Doctor Who

    He is a great Doctor Who, i put him in second place. He did awesome for being a different Doctor Who he added more to his character, and added something else to the others.

    Science Fiction at its silliest

    I ordered this set after watching David Tennant as Doctor Who on TV. I eventually want to own those episodes, also, but thought I should start with the first Doctor Who, Christopher Eccleston. (Well, he's actually not the first--there were episodes years ago on British TV.) I did not like Eccleston nearly as well as Tennant, but these episodes are fun to watch--bordering on silly--see the one with the aliens with the flatulence problem.

    LOVEE IT!

    Coming from USA, Doctor Who isn't shown much anymore. Season 1 was great! But the following seasons are even better, if you haven't already watched it. The cheeky and witty doctor makes it all entertaining, interesting, and fun. Most definitely recommend this to any science fiction fan. I wasn't even that big of a fan, but i LOVE this show! Can't wait for season 5!

    Inside the TARDIS -- in a new way, perhaps...

    I admit I'm probably one in a minority of American viewers who suddenly has taken an interest in "Doctor Who" (although I confess to only being familiar with one actual episode from the Tom Baker era, "The Talons of Weng-Chiang"), but somehow I felt intrigued to get this DVD set to see for myself what the fuss was about. One of the longest running shows from the BBC, this updated version features Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor, with pop artist/actress Billie Piper joining the ranks as the Doctor's companion Rose Tyler. Altogether, having watched this set (and the wonderful special features included as well, especially "Doctor Who Confidential" which was a BBC-only special made during the time this new version first came out back in 2005), it's no wonder why this show's popularity hasn't faded just yet. Best episodes: the two part "Aliens of London" / "World War Three," "Dalek," and the two part "The Empty Child" / "The Doctor Dances"

    Dr. Who returns to the small screen after being off the air for several years.

    This is an updated series great for kids and adults alike. The story lines are great and the characters have great chemistry. The special effects are top quality episode after episode. Introduces new characters and throws in plot twists; and recalls old and new enemies. It'll keep you entertained and guessing. The music is fantastic. The christmas episodes are great too. Note: Torchwood is a spin off of Dr. Who and is darker and is for more mature adults - recommend preview before showing to younger (less than 15 years old) children.

    Fun

    I have been vaguely aware of doctor who for a number of years, since at least fifth grade, which is probably about twenty years ago. Not until I got this DVD, did I actually sit down and watch a whole episode all the way through.

    I liked the humor- "Lots of planets have a North!" and the action. Billie Piper as Rose, is decent eye-candy. The links to previous Doctor Who history were interesting.

    One area that is surprisingly good is the show's handling of real world history. The Doctor's meeting with Charles Dickens stands out particularly.

    WORST SHOW EVER!!!

    This is the worst show I have ever seen! It is totally uncreative and stupid! My neighbor showed me a few episodes of this show after my party, and it was the worst thing I have ever seen! Please watch other shows, anything but this! Go watch something good and classic, like a show on TV Land, anything but this show!

    Dark but hot

    This doctor has a dark feel but he still enjoys the fun parts of being a time lord. He balances helping Rose figure things out and letting her puzzle it out on her own. She's got a few tricks of her own, and he begins to appreciate that as the series goes on.

    *giggle* Chris and Billie have the wittiest banter of all SciFi couples... It was a joy to see them together.....though Chris has since left....but David Tennant is a joy to watch.. not only to watch him walk *drool* or put on those seksi glasses....but to watch him act is a joy among joys, he and Billie worked so well together....I cannot wait until tomorrow...

    Doctor Who (2005) - The Complete First Series

    I have never seen Doctor Who before this current Season one that aired on SciFi. At first it seemed too....fake for me...but it's witty humor and hilarious villains quickly drew me in. I highly recommend this show to all SciFi fans who know how to have fun (trust me there are those who can't find funny fun) The Doctor (Chris) and Rose (Billie) are a true team.... with heart warming moments and tense battles...this farfetched SciFi will keep you on edge and in stitches...

    Dr Who Newbie

    I'd never seen Dr. Who before watching the newest series and I have to say that for sci-fi, it's pretty decent for a television show. I love the chemistry between the Doctor and Rose and their adventures are odd, far-fetched, and interesting... everything that a good story should be. I could live without Rose's mom and Micky, but I really love the sneaky way threads are drawn through time. I'm not so keen on the newest Doctor from Season 2, he's a bit too schizophrenic for me, but the stories are non-the-less classic sci-fi..plenty of monsters, plenty of action, and plenty of odd surroundings.

    The best Dr Who yet

    I grew up with Dr Who, hiding behind the sofa as an an 8 year old when the daleks came on screen. Dr Who every Saturday was a must-see event for me and all the other kids in my school. Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper are excellent as the new Dr Who and his assistant Rose. Amazingly, my kids who grew up on Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter also love the new Dr Who, so it must have something that spans the generations.

    A very awesome show!!!

    I can't believe what some of the reviewers are saying about this show. This is by far one of THE best scifi programs out there. The doctor and rose's adventures are entertaining and are always full of witty humor. My guess is that some of the viewers who dislike the show just don't get it. It's whoosh, you know? The plots great, the acting great, the new doctor...Frickin' awesome!!!!! If you liked this doctor, wait'll you get a load of the next one. If you didn't like it...well i'm sorry. Because you're lame.

    Something I noticed about the poor reviews.

    Notice how the people who hate this series hate it for what it isn't (Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, etc.) and not what it is. And what is it? Science fiction for those of us who actually like some fun in our sci-fi instead of gloomy doomsday scenarios and overthetop melodrama. Give it a shot. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

    Wonderful!

    I was a fan of the original series (especially Tom Baker). When Sci-fi announced it would be showing season 1 of the new series I was really excited. Normally when that happens the show, movie or book I am so looking forward to is terribly disappointing (with a few notable exceptions). Doctor Who DID NOT disappoint me! It was great. Stayed true to the old but reveled in the new. Christopher Eccleston is brilliant and Billie Piper is wonderful. The stories were clever and fun. Loved Captain Jack and would like to see his spin off. Series 2 starts on Friday here in the States and I am soooo looking forward to seeing David Tennant’s take on the role. Although I must say having seen him in Secret Smile it may take a bit for me to see him as the Doctor rather than a good looking, yet creepy, evil, stalker/rapist guy.
