Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Jeffrey Iorio
There’s a reason why Doctor Who became the longest-running science fiction series of all time. More than anything, the show continually delivered sharp writing and mind-bending plotlines. The Caves of Androzani is no exception and is widely considered to be one of the finest installments in the series’ history. The episode, which marks the final appearance of Peter Davison as the Time Lord (he was the fifth of eight), involves a search for Spectrox, a life-prolonging drug at the center of a civil war on the planet Androzani. As Doctor Who and his companion, Peri (Nicola Bryant), attempt to decipher Androzani’s myriad mysteries, they become embroiled in a race against time to escape a fatal disease they’ve picked up along the way. The final scene, the regeneration that brings us the sixth Doctor Who, is one of the show’s most talked about moments. For the uninitiated, Caves is a perfect introduction to the world of Who. And for diehards, it’s a nostalgic trip through science fiction’s most well traveled time machine.
