Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Before Ridley Scott's Alien exposed the unspeakable horrors lurking in all corners of the universe, Sci-Fi's best known time-traveler had already been-there, done-that. This six-DVD set features Tom Baker, the fourth and most popular Doctor Who, as he travels with his intergalactic sidekick Romana Mary Tamm while they comb the universe for the six segments of the powerful Key to Time. The stories collected here are "The Ribos Operation," "The Pirate Planet," "The Stones of Blood," "The Androids of Tara," "The Power of Kroll" and "The Armageddon Factor." For many Who fans, the Tom Baker years rank among the best. This brand new six-disc collection delivers Baker's pinnacle -- the 1978 "Key to Time" arc -- and features episode commentaries among other DVD extras.
  • "The Ribos Operation" Doctor Who and Romana trace the first segment of the Key to Time to a faraway planet plagued with ignorance, con artists, spies and interminably long winters.
  • "The Pirate Planet" The search for the Key's second segment is written by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy's Douglas Adams, and brings the Doctor to the blissful world of Zanak, whose inhabitants are unaware that pirates are in charge.
  • "The Stones of Blood" The third installment brings the good Doctor and Romana to the English countryside and an ancient stone circle known as "The Nine Travelers."
  • "The Androids of Tara" Doctor Who takes time out of his busy fishing schedule to pick up the fourth segment of the Key to Time in this swashbuckling homage to The Prisoner of Zenda.
  • "The Power of Kroll" "Swampies," octopoids and a host of other pitfalls beset the Doctor as he travels to the moon of Delta Magna to find the fifth segment of the Key.
  • "The Armageddon Factor" The final installment in the quest for the Key brings Doctor Who and Romana to Atrios, a planet teetering on the brink of destruction.

    A Key to Success?

In the late 1970s Tom Baker ruled the airwaves every Saturday evening in what has come to be recognised as a golden era of BBC output. The Key to Time season - the 16th series in Doctor Who's history - was a brave attempt to consolidate Baker's popularity and to get the audience in front of the TV for 26 straight weeks. The linked theme of the stories is, however, tenuous with the Key itself being split into six segments each located in its own secret space/time location. The impressive - and extremely funny ''Ribos Operation'' sets up the premise with a deft hand - and not a single word of dialog is wasted in Robert Holmes' sparkling script. Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy scribe Douglas Adams provides the second - and under rated - Pirate Planet with what can only be described as an energetic performance from Bruce Purchase as the Pirate Captain. However, by the third story - and incidentally the hundreth Doctor Who adventure, te rot begins to set in. THe first few episodes of The Stones of Blood are atmospheric and well directed but lead to the second half of the story which is designed to showcase just how far the series had moved from the days of Hartnell and Troughton. The genesis of the student humour is sewn throughout the season and is prevalent in the last two episodes of theis story. The second half of the season begins with the delightful Androids of Tara and gives the beautiful Mary Tamm a dual role. But whereas Tara is charming and colourful, the next story - Power of Kroll is tedious and dull. Things do not really improve with the finale - the overlong 6 parter ''The Armaggeddon Factor'' - which again relies to heavily on comedy when drama should be showcased. The final episode of the season does bring things back up to speed but by this time the audience has probably forgotten the reason for the quest anyway. Thoughout the season Tom baker shines like a diamond in the rough - from the petulance over being give a new companion - Romana - against his will to the faked megalomania in episode 26. But in retrospect the rot of his tenure had set in and the next few years of his reign - save for gems like City of Death - would never reach the dizzy heights of what had gone before. None the less each story holds a secret magic that is that undefined quantity known as ''Doctor Who'' This set is therefore a peice of history and a chance to relive one's youth. The six stories feature a variety of commentaries - from Baker and Tamm to actors in secondary roles - such as John Leeson (the voice of the ever popular K-9)and aforementioned Bruce Purchase. Production notes are provided by means of subtitles - 50% of which are written by Richard Molesworth of the Doctor Who Restoration Team. All in all a good introduction to 70s Who and beautifully presented in a sturdy case. Please buy immediately!
