Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
A hugely popular sci-fi series whose British TV run spanned a generation, Doctor Who eventually crossed the ocean and gained new legions of fans here in America. It still holds the record for ingenuity in replacing a star: the good Doctor, who travels across time and space in his transportation machine, the Tardis, happens to be a member of an alien race that can fend off aging and mortal wounds by transforming their damaged bodies into completely different, humanoid forms. So when one Doctor Who decided to leave the series, another could easily take his place without engendering the disbelief of loyal fans who, it should be noted, were nonetheless sorry to see their favorites depart. "Seeds of Death," a six-episode story arc originally broadcast in 1969, found the then-current Doctor Patrick Troughton, aided by friends Jamie Frazer Hines and Zoe Wendy Padbury, racing to the moon to do battle with Martian "Ice Warriors," who had seized control of a global teleportation system that would facilitate their invasion of Earth. Shot on cramped soundstages and barely enhanced by primitive and perfunctory special effects, the Doctor Who serials entranced viewers by virtue of their imaginative story lines, cheeky humor, and winning performances by enthusiastic casts. You can get an idea of how seriously they took themselves from random lines of dialogue, including this story's oft-quoted riposte by the Doctor to his Martian captors: "You can't kill me, I'm a genius!" One of the series standouts -- and a great showcase for the popular Troughton -- "Seeds of Death" has all the qualities that made Doctor Who such an audience favorite on both sides of the Atlantic.
