Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
Victorian London is the setting for murder and mayhem in Doctor Who: The Talons of Weng-Chiang, a six-episode story from the mid-'70s heyday of the great TV serial. Tom Baker is the mysterious "Doctor," who arrives in late-19th-century London in his time-traveling London police box to take a turn as Sherlock Holmes, investigating the mysterious disappearances of a series of young women. The apparent adversaries here include an evil Chinese magician, his ventriloquist's dummy, a secret Chinese cult, and a giant sewer rat. Yes, this is prime Who. The bushy-haired Baker -- the fourth and most popular incarnation of the Doctor -- is particularly charming here as he exchanges his trademark extra-long scarf for a deerstalker cap. His traveling companion is also a fan favorite, the sexy Amazon Leela Louise Jameson. Socially dated, the mysteries of the "Orient" give this episode a peculiar tang, and the overgrown rodent is as cheesy as they come, so it's easy to understand why this particular arc ranks among the series' most popular story lines.
