Doctor Who - The War Games

( 4 )

Overview

The TARDIS materializes in World War I, in a world of trench warfare, barbed wire and poison gas. Surrounded by chaos and paranoia, the second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) and his companions are separated from their ship, captured, and court-martialed. Facing impossible odds, the Doctor seeks help from his own race -- the Time Lords, who make their first appearance here. Hours of extras include audio commentary and "making-of" featurettes.

Doctor Who - the War Games

WHOvians KNOW what it is all about! Great Entertainment!
Other people? They just.. well... Missed the boat.
HA HA HA I gave it 5 stars for Inspirational.
It is for ALL - Beginners and Experts.
I gave it a 4 for Stylish ONLY because of the Black and White, else everything else is a 5 stars.
I didn't give it a rating for the Clarity of Instruction because if you are too thick to figure out a DVD... you wouldn't be ordering one, thus you don't need instructions.

    I Also Recommend:

The end of the Second Doctor era

Doctor Who: The War Games is an engaging, intelligent(and long)ten-part serial that provides a fitting farewell for Patrick Troughton's clownish, eccentric Second Doctor; as well as two of the series' most appealing companions Jamie and Zoe. The story has the TARDIS materialize on what appears to be the barbwire-ridden trenches of the Western Front in 1917; but is actually a planet where soldiers pulled from different wars in Earth's history forced to fight in war games being conducted by 2 renegade Time Lords in order create an unbeatable superarmy from its survivors to conquer the galaxy. As with many Doctor Who stories, it holds together and entertains as long you don't give the story premise too much scrutiny. While it's one of the longest serials the show had done in the 1960's, it's well-paced and doesn't feel as long as some of the 6 and 8-part stories of the same era. There's some history mixed into the plot with armies from the Roman Empire, the English Civil War, the American Civil War, WW1 and others(who says Doctor Who isn't educational?). There's some great baddies in the scenery-chewing War CHief and the calm, methodical psychopath the War Lord. And this story features the historic first appearance of the Doctor's own people, the Time Lords and their home planet(identified later in the series as Gallifrey)! This marks the end of an era for the show and the Jon Pertwee era that followed in the 1970's would set the show off in a decidedly different direction. The special features on this disc include an audio commentary, a making-of featurette, a look at the "regenerations" throughout the show's run, a feature on the Second Doctor comic strips and even the fanfilm "Devious" which has the late Jon Pertwee's last ever performance as the Third Doctor. This is a disc that no die-hard Whovian(i.e. Doctor Who fan) can afford to be without and well worth your money!
