"One of the biggest catalog favorites from the Warner Bros. library gets a worthwhile redux on this disc. The new anamorphic transfer is a substantial improvement on the 1997 DVD, offering more vivid colors and sharper detail. The audio retains the original mono soundtrack and it's a good one that boasts a nice clarity to its dialogue and an atmospheric use of sound effects. The feature disc also includes a commentary track with Sidney Lumet that offers an outstanding amount of information on this film. Lumet covers all the bases, from aesthetic to technical, and keeps all the information rolling at a nice steady pace. The first disc is capped by the original theatrical trailer. The second disc contains the majority of the extras. The centerpiece in a new four-part documentary on the film that covers the story that inspired the film, how it was cast, the details of its production, and the public response to it. These pieces offer new interviews with Lumet, Al Pacino, and many other principals and do a fine job chronicling the film's history. The other feature on disc two is a vintage production featurette that offers some fun, interesting on-the-set footage showing Lumet and his cast at work. All in all, this is a great set and a must for any Dog Day Afternoon fan."
