Doo wop music has fallen out of favor, but there remains a solid if small fan base for the great vocal groups of the '50s and '60s. This disc documents a 1999 Pittsburgh concert featuring some of those historic bands. The disc offers a standard full-frame transfer. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. There are neither subtitles nor closed captions on this release. In addition to the fabulous music, the disc offers interviews with various members of the different bands. This is a great disc for doo wop enthusiasts, but there is little here for the average DVD consumer.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Glen Sansone
This DVD packs all the sha-na-nas, dip-de-dip-dips, and shoo-bee-wops one could ever be expected to handle, thanks to an all-star cast featuring many of the most popular doo-wop artists ever recorded. A trip down memory lane in two volumes, it is a celebration doo-wop music's golden anniversary, recorded in Pittsburgh in May 1999, featuring glittery vocal performances by acts such as the Platters ("Only You") and Jimmy Beaumont and the Skyliners ("Since I Don't Have You"). Gene Chandler and Pure Gold's rousing rendition of the classic "Duke of Earl" stands out among several showstoppers. It's a must for any doo-wop fan or for anyone who wants to hold their sweetheart in their arms, close their eyes, and dance to imaginary starlight.
