Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
Legendary crime author Dorothy Sayers's quintessentially aristocratic amateur criminologist, Lord Peter Wimsey, mixes sleuthing and wooing in Dorothy L. Sayers Mysteries, the 1987 3-part, 10-episode BBC TV production that aired in the US on PBS's Mystery! series. Edward Petherbridge stars as the monocled crime solver, and the three novels adapted for the series chronicle Wimsey's romantic pursuit of mystery writer Harriet Vane Harriet Walter in 1930s England. In part one, "Strong Poison," Wimsey falls head over heels for Vane while she's on trial for the murder of her lover, and then employs his skills as a detective to prove her innocence. He continues his pursuit in "Have His Carcase," as the two mystery buffs investigate the death of a Russian gigolo whose corpse Vane discovers while picnicking on a beach. And this long courtship comes to its conclusion in "Gaudy Night," as Wimsey and Vane work to uncover the identity of an obscene poison pen who's plaguing Vane's Alma Mater, Oxford. Each of the leisurely paced mysteries has its appeal, with plenty of suspects, twists, and red herrings. But the unusual Wimsey/Vane romance is the real pleasure here. Don't expect sparks or smoldering glances; virtually all romantic tension between this rather cerebral pair is buried under Wimsey's flippant and frequent declarations of love and proposals of marriage and Vane's stony resistance. It's an affair that is oddly, almost perversely, compelling. Petherbridge is the perfect Wimsey, with a slightly foppish charm and effeminate manner quite faithful to Sayers's vision. And Walter's portrayal of the stubborn, fiercely independent Vane oozes stoicism through every pore. The overall effect is British in the extreme, so chaste as to seem almost exotic, and so bone-dry that it is curiously refreshing.

    more from this reviewer

    Thoroughly enjoyable

Impecable performances by both Mr. Petherbridge and Ms. Walter. Although Gaudy Nights does not mirror the written text of Sayers, its adaption is, nevertheless, quite good.
