Overview

An aspiring supervillain discovers that taking over the world is no easy task while attempting to get accepted into the Evil League of Evil and summoning the courage to finally make conversation with his laundromat crush. Better known to the world as "Dr. Horrible," Billy (Neil Patrick Harris) has big plans for world domination, though they never seem to pan out. If Billy could just accomplish his duel goals of gaining entry into the most exclusive supervillain club in the world and finally break the ice with pretty Penny (Felicia Day), perhaps people would start taking him seriously as a diabolical mad genius. The only thing preventing Billy from realizing his one true destiny as a destroyer of worlds is his arch nemesis Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion), an irritating do-gooder who thwarts him at every turn, and seems to have an eye on Penny as well. But Billy's got a plan, and if it all goes right he'll soon be sitting pretty in the E.L.E. with Penny by his side, and rid of pesky Captain Hammer once and for all.

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is a 42-minute musical drama-comedy in three acts that appeared exclusively on the Web in July 2008 and was available free for a limited time. Joss Whedon -- creator of TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- wrote the songs, music, and dialogue along with his brothers Zack (a television writer) and Jed (a composer), and the latter's fiancée, actress Maurissa Tancharoen. It stars Neil Patrick Harris as Billy, a.k.a. Dr. Horrible, a fledgling super-villain who wants nothing more than to get into the Evil League of Evil, led by Bad Horse (the Thoroughbred of Sin). The "Blog" portion of the title refers to Dr. Horrible's video diary, wherein we learn of his nemesis, Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion), and Horrible's unrequited love for Penny (Felicia Day), a volunteer at the homeless shelter. We witness Horrible's many failed attempts at impressing the League, until Bad Horse requests that he kill someone to get accepted. As with many of Whedon's previous creations, things take a dark turn as the series reaches its conclusion. What's unique about this short Web series (aside from its popularity -- the first episode was viewed so many times it crashed Whedon's site) are the clever and catchy songs that Harris (especially), Fillion, and Day perform. Especially good are the opening song, "My Freeze Ray," Harris's duet with Day in "My Eyes," "Brand New Day," and the ensemble piece "So They Say." The DVD features a regular commentary, "Commentary! The Musical," winning entries from the Evil League of Evil competition, plus bonuses and Easter eggs.

This delightful musical was very well written and implimented. This web series is the best thing to come out of the Writer's Strike (though writers getting paid what they should certainly does come close). None of the characters feel minor and one feels engaged from the moment it begins. This movie was funny and touching and even though it didn't end the way one might like it is still legendary.

3 layers: Hilarious, a bit of sad, and more hilarious! I've seen Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog at least 10 times, and it NEVER gets old. I listen to the soundtrack (which I bought through iTunes) in my car, while working, and especially while doing laundry. Even my mother enjoyed this light-hearted comedy-and she doesn't normally enjoy shows with such humor, or where the audience is expected to emphasize with the villain. (Although whether or not Dr. Horrible is actually villain material is under applicaton.) Buy it, watch it, sing along with it, love it. You won't regret it.

Bought it for my husband and son, especially my son since he is a big "Barney Stinson" fan. It is silly and humorous. I understand that it was Neil Patrick Harris's creative project during the writer's strike a year or so back. He is quite a creative person and we have definitely gotten a kick out of this DVD set.

I am a fan of Joss Whedon but hadn't known about the Dr. Horrible web episodes, so when I stumbled across the DVD thought I give it a shot. It certainly didn't disappoint! Loved the humor, Loved the music. The actors seemed to be having a great time which just added to the enjoyment of this superhero/evil villain spoof. I've always liked shows that combined some drama/comedy with music. Dr. Horrible was like finding and eating a goodie you didn't know you had, sinfully delicious.

Great tongue in cheek musical story of a "mad scientist"s" struggles to win the heart of the woman he loves. Neil Patrick Harris is wonderful as Doctor Horrible and Nathan Fillion is very funny as the too good to be true hero who rescues Horrible's intended conquest from his nefarious scheme.

5***** Although this video is available to see online, the DVD gives a much better experience. Although it is a short movie (around 45 minutes) it is worth EVERY CENT. It is funny, quirky, ironic, sarcastic, and has amazing music. Although the title suggests that the content is rather childish, this movie is geared towards people 12-112. This is not a bare-bones DVD. It has tons of bonus features: subtitles, commentaries, making of documentaries, trailers, and even a whole new musical (COMMENTARY! The Musical) which is quite amusing. This movie is like nothing you've seen before (unless you've seen this movie). This is a definite buy

This is such a funny movie, that Neil Patrick Harris made during the writer strike. It totally shows his creative genius.
