Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Cree McCree
She didn't vanquish vampires like Buffy or kick major butt like Xena. But in her own quiet way, Dr. Michaela "Mike" Quinn was very much a warrior -- and the demons that fell to her frontier scalpel were real. As a lone female doctor in the macho Wild West, she battled disease and pestilence, along with ignorance and prejudice, and built a fiercely devoted fan base on staid old CBS. Much of that passion was inspired by series star Jane Seymour, a British actress who perfectly embodied the quintessentially American title role. The writing was also smart, turning a post-Civil War lens on contemporary social problems, from environmental pollution to gun control. During the classic first season, Dr. Mike evolves from an effete Boston Brahmin to a hardy pioneer and -- after adopting three orphans -- single mother. Along the way, she earns her "medicine woman" name from the local Cheyenne, makes General George Custer cool his heels while she treats injured braves, and casts a romantic eye on a wary mountain man named Sully Joe Lando. Season 1 also boasts some standout turns from guest stars, including Jane Wyman as Dr. Mike's snooty mother and the incomparable Johnny Cash as an itinerant gunslinger.
