Overview

A real oddity that fizzled in theatres, Duets ended up being more popular as a soundtrack then as a movie. But this Disney DVD release of the movie shows that misfires are sometimes more interesting than hits. Duets is grungy looking, badly paced, and constantly shifts in tone between light and dark comedy and mawkish tragedy. But it's also very well acted, features genuine moments of tenderness, and many of the karaoke scenes really take off. The DVD format is very good at enabling viewers to single out Duets' better moments, while director Bruce Paltrow's audio commentary and interviews suggests that the movie didn't exactly turn out as planned. Paltrow goes in-depth about how hard it was to get this movie made and the problems involved in the shoot and with his health (he had cancer). The DVD also features deleted scenes, a multiple-viewpoint music video, a good widescreen anamorphic transfer of the gritty-looking movie, and a great audio transfer that negates the need to buy the hit soundtrack for your home stereo.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The always-winning Gwyneth Paltrow lends star power to Duets, a delightful, airy ensemble piece built on the premise that ordinary people often distinguish themselves in extraordinary situations. In this case, it's a national championship for karaoke singers from all across the country. Paltrow plays the daughter of over-the-hill rocker Huey Lewis, who enters the competition solely for the $5,000 prize. Harried, limelight-craving salesman Paul Giamatti teams up with a new friend, ex-con Andre Braugher; and tough-minded, footloose Maria Bello partners with soulful cabbie Scott Speedman. Director Bruce Paltrow (Gwyneth's dad and veteran director of television programs) bounces from one pair of characters to another, lingering with each twosome just long enough to establish plot points and flesh out characterizations. His staging of the climactic karaoke contest, while not exactly up to Busby Berkeley standards, makes good use of talented performers not known for their musical abilities: Paltrow holds her own in a duet with Lewis; Giamatti and Braugher belt out "Try a Little Tenderness" with surprising soulfulness; and brassy Bello rocks the house with "Sweet Dreams." These dynamic sequences, combined with the uniformly fine performances, make Duets an extremely enjoyable, albeit minor, comedy-drama. Paltrow père and producer Kevin Jones offer running commentary on the DVD, which also sports deleted scenes and a music video ("Cruisin'").

...if there ever was a chick-flick for guys, this one's it! It's got it all, hot babes (Maria and Gwyneth), prison break, mid-life crisis, and good music. If for nothin' else, Gwyneth's redition of 'Betty Davis Eyes' is the sexiest cinema ever on the mainstream big-screen!

I really liked this movie. The songs were great. I didn't know Andre Braugher had such a voice. The duets with Paul Giamatti and Andre were such fun. I enjoyed Cruisin' with Huey and Gwyneth a lot.

I tell everyone I know that they must watch ''Duets''. All that do watch it come back to thank me. A ''feel-good'' movie without being sappy, great music (who knew Gwyneth Paltrow could sing like that). Buy it. You'll love it.

This movie made me laugh, it made me cry, and everything in between. The music is great, the characters are great. It is not your run of the mill movie. Definately give it a try.

I fell in love with this one. If you love music, you'll love this movie. Gwyneth sounded phanominal singing with Huey Lewis. I could watch it again & again. A Must See for everyone!
