Dumbo

( 18 )

Overview

A Disney masterpiece, Dumbo is the story of a shy little elephant with some really big ears. The 1.33:1 full frame transfer of this classic cartoon looks very good, though there are still some noticeable flaws in the image. Overall, the colors look bright and well-saturated with only a small amount of bleeding present. While a small amount of grain shows up in the picture, it is never intrusive enough to distract from the viewing. The audio is presented in a newly remixed Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack in English, ...

The audio is presented in a newly remixed Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack in English, French, and Spanish. It is certainly nice to have a new 5.1 remix on this disc, though, because of the age of the film, many of the effects and surround usage sound forced. However, the bulk of the soundtrack is free of any distortion or excessive hiss. Also included on this disc are English captions. Dumbo has been given the royal treatment for its first time on DVD when it comes to special features. To start off this disc, there is a screen-specific commentary track by historian John Canemaker. This is a great commentary for fans to listen to, as it gives much information about the history of the film. A "Dumbo Art Gallery" is a collection of 120 stills that has everything from conceptual designs to rare photos from the film. "Celebrating Dumbo" is a featurette that includes interviews with everyone from Roy Disney to critic Leonard Maltin discussing their thoughts on and the impact of Dumbo. Two animated shorts are included that should please both children and adults alike. A "Sound Design" featurette focuses on the recording of some of the actors voices for the film. There is another featurette about the making of the sequel, Dumbo II. Finally there are original trailers for Dumbo's 1941 premiere, as well as the 1949 re-release, some DVD-ROM features, and a few "Sing-Along-Songs" for the kids. All age groups should readily enjoy this DVD release of the classic animated Dumbo.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Walt Disney's fourth animated feature soars to new heights on this digitally remastered "60th Anniversary Edition" VHS and, for the first time, on DVD. This was Walt's favorite of his animated features or so he claims in his introduction to the film's first TV broadcast, which is included on the DVD. Exquisitely simple, Dumbo tells the touching and triumphant story of the young circus elephant whose oversize ears mark him as a "Freak!" to other pachyderms. But thanks to his mother's love and the friendship of Timothy J. Mouse, he discovers that the very thing that holds him down will lift him up to become "the 9th wonder of the Universe" and the circus's star attraction. Listen for Sterling Holloway Winnie-the-Pooh as the weighted-down stork who delivers Dumbo; and wrestle with your sense of the politically correct as jive-talking crows sing one of the film's signature songs, "When I See an Elephant Fly." The Oscar-winning score also includes the heartbreaking "Baby Mine" and the surreal "Pink Elephants on Parade," two classic sequences that rank high among Disney's most inspired. The archival goodies included on the 60th Anniversary DVD editions are true treasures: There are several illuminating segments that chart the film's production, as well as insightful and meticulous commentary by animator and historian John Canemaker. Kids will enjoy two vintage "Silly Symphony" cartoons, two sing-alongs, and a DVD storybook. This is the definitive Dumbo -- pure and primal entertainment your family will never forget.

Pink Elephants On Parade Once More!

'Dumbo' is the delightful tale of a floppy-eared elephant that comes into his own when he realizes, with the aid of Timothy Q. Mouse (vocal by Edward Brophy) that he can fly. Filled with Uncle Walt's masterful gifts of storytelling and memorable music, this is a genuine treasure that, no matter your age, will warm your heart. For those new to the film, the scene in which Dumbo's mother is imprisoned warrants bringing a box of Kleenex. Coupled with the song, 'Baby Mine', it's truly heart-breaking. Sterling Holloway narrates as Mr. Stork and the outstanding vocal ensemble includes Cliff Edwards as Jim Crow and Margaret Wright as the spirited steam engine ¿ Casey Jr. The transfer on Dumbo is outstanding. This is a rich and vibrant animated picture that completely captures the spirit and vitality of Disney animation. There is a bit of film grain and some minor age related artifacts present but nothing to distract. Also, some edge enhancement does crop up now and then. Colors are solid and vibrant. Contrast levels are bang on. The audio has been remastered and remixed and is very nicely spread. Extras include a making-of documentary, some short subjects and a theatrical trailer. All-in-all, great good fun. 'Dumbo' is a family classic. It sparkles with the kind of innocence and mastery in the craft of animation that is sadly lacking from Disney's current crop of feature films.
