Overview

The reputation of Dutch painter Jan Vermeer (1632-1675) rests on the 36 paintings left to us today. This documentary chronicles the artist's life and times, and explores his highly stylized art. He is most noteworthy for his mathematically precise style and his depiction of Dutch working people in ordinary, everyday life. He was considered a true revolutionary for finding such subjects worthy of artistic endeavor. He was a member of the important artist's guild of his day, but made his living as an art dealer rather than as a painter. While well known to his contemporaries, Vermeer's work was largely forgotten for over 200 years until the 19th century Romantic movement, which celebrated the common person as artistic subject. The film features on-location footage, as well as commentary and analysis by world-renowned art scholars. ~ Rose of Sharon Winter
