I initially saw this movie only because I love Viggo Mortenson's acting. I must say that now I love the movie because it has a depth that I never imagined it would. The portrayal of the character's emotions and the contrast between their inner selves and the front that they portray to others, especially concerning Viggo's character, is amazing to see played out on screen. The plot ties you in with the complexitites of the workings of a faction of the Russian mob. The only thing that would put off some people from seeing this movie is that it can get rather violent at times.

I've seen this movie 3 times and will probably see it several more. The story draws you into to way of life that is foreign to most of us. Viggo did an outstanding acting job and hopefully will be recognized for his work. The rest of the cast all complimented each other. You won't be disappointed!

If you love mafia movies such as goodfellas, the departed and etc then you will love Eastern Promises. Viggo Mortensens performance is the best of his career. It is a definite must see.

I felt they could have taken it a little further, but I still found the plot engrossing enough. There is a decent twist within it too. All the actors did a good job...but Viggo Mortensen definitely stole the show. He was slick, smooth, and all around was just a bad@$$ in this movie. He did a wonderful Russian accent as well. All the actors did a good job though. Some parts of this movie were a bit brutal and bloody, so if you're of a weak constituation, I would recommend avoiding this movie, but if you like a good gangster drama and a bit of gore doesn't bother you too much, this is a good flick for you.

This movie was slightly overrated, if you ask me. It had say that ad great potential as Viggo Mortensen nearly carried the day, but he was too sly. I would have given this film more stars if Mortenson and Watts had given their able performances as they could have been able to carry the day, but they ended yo losing. I would also say the plot had a total Hollywood spin as to be irrelevant.

I couldn't wait to see it, but I have to say after the first viewing, like "History of Violence," I was extremely dissappointed. I was starting to wonder what was going on with Cronenberg and why he was making these films that realm around the mob. I'm more of a fan of his earlier work with "Videodrome, the Fly, Naked Lunch," so maybe I was just expecting a little too much. After a few years and more debates than I can count on how well "History of Violence" and "Eastern Promises" stand out in American Film Cinema. I decided after a few years of not seeing "History of Violence" and a year for "Eastern Promises," to check them both out again and this time after more pondering and with more of what to expect, I actually found these features to be very interesting and compelling. Especially "Eastern Promises." The story is about the Russian Mafia Outfit in London, with Viggo Mortensen playing a Russian stone-cold killer type driver for the Bosses son played by Vincent Cassel. Naomi Watts plays an innocent (since she's so good at that) nurse who comes a across a pregnant teenagers diary which discusses the brutal nature of the local Mafia Outfit. The story is an intense thrill-ride and keeps you wanting more and more. Mortensen portrays his character beautifully and in my mind is his best acting gig to date. Covering himself in Prison tattoos and conquering a rough Soviet dialect, he kind of reminds me of DeNiro playing Vito Corleone in the Godfather Part 2. So in the end, I think you're either going to love this film or hate it. Like I stated in the beginning, it took me a while to get into this feature and to comprehend the entire subject as a whole. Sure at times, it might not seem like the film's pace is quick enough, but after more viewing, I think that overall, it's a damn fine piece of art. I think and even Viggo Mortensen explains on the Special Features Featurette that both "History of Violence" and "Eastern Promises" are companions, they're not sequals, but the concepts of Violence and the Mob are the same. So this film will either be a hit or miss with you...just watch with an open mind.

I actually fell asleep when I saw the film in theatres, but it was still really good. Viggo's performance was above par, as was the girl's, and the father's. All in all, a great family film...but not for the kids.
