Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
Lipstick, eyeliner, and high heels add a touch of transvestite charm to the stand-up comedy of British comedian Eddie Izzard. In Dress to Kill, a live performance taped in San Francisco and first aired on HBO, the energetic, verbally agile comedian addresses a wide range of topics, including his own transvestism and sexual identity, both of which somehow manage to elude definition. Most of his time is spent on subjects unrelated to his cross-dressing, though, such as films, television, losing his virginity, the NRA, and the history of Western civilization. He explains how the British Empire conquered through the "cunning use of flags" and why Scooby-Doo is among the world's most important literary figures. Other historical heavyweights who get the Izzard treatment include Henry VIII (and his six wives), Hitler, and Martin Luther, while the comedian's trademark impersonations of Sean Connery and James Mason (the latter serving nicely as the voice of God) are as dead-on as ever. Never raunchy or shocking, Dress to Kill is vintage Izzard: two hours of hilarity from a man with a decidedly quick wit, a truckload of charm, and a most original sense of fashion.

    On heels as well.....

Eddie Izzard is pure comic genius!! Hilarity ensues on this 2 hour journey of laughs from British comedian Eddie Izzard (born in Yemen). I own the audio c.d of this DVD and it keeps me in stitches for hours! My favorites are his references to mormonism (I am a Mormon) and his bit on puberty! I highly recommend anything to do with Eddie Izzard!!

    I Also Recommend:

    Brilliant, smart humor!

Eddie Izzard is a brilliant comedian. I think this is his best work that he's done so far. The best part of the comedy is that it's mostly based in history, so you actually learn something about the history of the world, while laughing at the follies of the leaders of our past and present. Often unexpected, he makes fun of everyone and everything equally, from Hitler to the army to puberty. And he does it in an intellectual, honest manner. His facial expressions just enhance the comedy as well. This is truly enjoyable - One of my favorite comedians and comedy shows!

Refreshing with some certain connection with Robin Williams

Eddie Izzard definitely has his own perspective that is both thought evoking and hysterical. His style, while unique, is reminiscent of Robin Williams and his facial gestures bring to mind Tim Curry in Rocky Horror Picture show. The flavor of the humor is English and it both gives insight into the UK perspective and also looks at American society from a Brit's perspective. There is also a smattering of French thrown in. This particular DVD may be his best yet.

Oh, building a henge, are we?

I'm sure I'm not going to be adding anything new to the reviews, but in this performance Izzard creates a sustained hilarity that is wonderful to watch. Going back and doing the same joke over - in FRENCH - and getting as many laughs out of it as the first time was a stroke of genius. I wouldn't hazard a guess as to how much of his performance was off the cuff, but he certainly has the imporvisational talent necessary to expand beyond the script. Truly a talent, and worth the purchase.

    Comic Insanity

History, Movie's, comen knowledge, synisisme, and multi-culturel interest. These elements make Eddie Izzard one of the funniest stand up comedy performers of all time. Teasing the audience, relating his joke's to each other, and making our entire history look incredible rediculuous is his mastery. If your knowledge of history is strong, and you watch the news a lot, you will laugh your self some 8 minute abs in no time

    What a Surprise!

When Eddie first walks out on the stage, I am a little taken aback. With lipsick, eyeliner and high heels, I didn't know what to expect. But the more I watched the more I fell in love with his humor! Intelligent with a very wry sense of wit. The comparisons he makes about the Americans and English, with a little bit of the French thrown in is ''Spot on'' funny. I share this video with only the people I REALLY like!

    LMAO

No joke, Eddie Izzard is hysterical. At the end when he's speaking French must be the best part. He goes on and on about the select few sentences he learned in French as a kid and how they're useless now. You must get this DVD/VHS and then you'll understand!

You'll laugh from start to finish...

The very first time I saw this special was on HBO. I was having a TERRIBLE week, and low and behold I see a transvestite comedian on tv at 1am. I was practically rolling of my bed with tears in my eyes laughing. Eddie Izzard is HYSTERICAL. You won't be disappointed! I highly recommend this to EVERYONE!!
