    A Great Elektra!

If you can stand the harsh cords, ''Elektra'' is as rewarding an opera as any. And even if you can't, hearing a good ''Elektra'' is a must. This Met Opera production suffers from a sub-par Klytamnestra(Mignon Dunn), but a superb Elektra(Birgit Nilsson) and Chrysothemis(Leonie Rysanek). Rysanek tried her voice at all three major female roles, but her true calling is Chrysothemis and this DVD shows a great voice toward the end of her career belting out a great but underrated role. Nilsson is the best Elektra to listen to(the best Salome as well). Even if she doesn't look like a young girl, we can put aside the impossibilities for the almost 2 hours hours of the opera. Her opening monologue is harrowing and the final dance of utter joy is gripping, moving, and chaotically tragic all at the same time. This is a great ''Elektra''!
