Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Successful performers eager to rekindle the smoldering embers of a once white-hot career often receive the counsel that they should get back to their roots, which Ellen DeGeneres does in this hour of stand-up comedy that aired on HBO June 28, 2003. On its own merits, it should remind viewers that DeGeneres remains an observational comedian of the highest order, capable of wringing laughter from the everyday with all the genius of Jerry Seinfeld or…well, actually, there aren't many in their class. But this wonderful hour also benefits from what amounts to a 2003 explosion in DeGeneres's career. First, she made her biggest splash since coming out publicly as a lesbian on her eponymous ABC sitcom in 1997 with a hilarious voice-over turn in Disney's animated blockbuster Finding Nemo. Her breezy, affable charm has also proven a potent draw in the daytime TV talk show arena with The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which took to the air in late 2003. Viewers just discovering her through these ventures will likely be pleasantly distracted -- and often moved to vociferous laughter -- by this performance, recorded in New York's Beacon Theater early in the year. Tackling procrastination, celebrity fashion statements, public cell phone use, waving at people you think you know, and much more, DeGeneres's wit is wily and wonderful, yet never "blue." Longtime fans waiting for the comedian to hit her stride again will see that, without question, she has.

    Ellen Makes Me Laugh

This is the first time I've seen Ellen DeGeneres in more than a small clip. I did find her funny and enjoyed the humor. A day or two later snippets of some of her jokes were still running through my mind. I'll look forward to replays when I need to relax with a good laugh.

    Funny as HeLL!

Here and Now talks about the basic things in life so everyone can relate to them. No matter what she says I think she is HILARIOUS!! I can watch Here and Now over and over and not get tired of it! You'll laugh so hard that your stomach will hurt throughout the show...

    HILARIOUS!

My family and I have enjoyed this over and over. It is 'clean' enough for our 13 year old, something rarely found with a lot of comedians these days. Ellen's ability to find humor in situations that most of us encounter often is uncanny. Her delivery and the audience's reaction combine for a very enjoyable hour. Of course, most of the time we can't hear the audience, because we're laughing so hard ourselves!

    NEARLY LAUGHED MYSELF TO DEATH!

I saw this on cable, and I laughed solidly for ONE HOUR. I got to the point I COULDN'T laugh anymore! (Thank God it didn't run more than an hour!) This is one of the best routines I've heard. Ranks with George Carlin, in the old days, and Seinfeld, in my opinion. Am going tomorrow to buy it! Have to share it with friends and family. We all LOVE to laugh! (Wish it was also on VHS.)
