Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Matthew Carlin
Even without the Donald Duck outfits and the outsized rhinestone glasses in which he so lavishly entertained audiences years ago, Sir Elton John still packs a considerable live wallop. At this concert, recorded in October 2000 at Madison Square Garden, his fashion attack never goes beyond boldly colored blazers. The night clearly belongs to the music here, and Bernie Taupin -- John's lyricist from the beginning -- is on hand to take his bows as well. One Night Only is essentially a testament to the strength of their catalogue, compiled over some 30-plus albums. Never too vain to share the spotlight, Elton summons such A-listers as Bryan Adams for "Sad Songs Say So Much," Billy Joel for "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," and soul diva Mary J. Blige for a revved-up "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues." EJ also reaches out to the younger set with guest spots by budding popsters Ronan Keating of Britain's Boyzone for "Your Song," and Anastacia for "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting." In the blast from the past department, mid-'70s John protogégé Kiki Dee joins him to reprise their duet, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart." The DVD and VHS versions preserve the precise order of the show.
