Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The Los Angeles-based rescue squad of Station 51 and the hardworking medics of Rampart Emergency Hospital continue their collaboration in the 1972-73 season of this Jack Webb-produced drama. The show's second year isn't significantly different than the first, except perhaps for a slightly more pronounced emphasis on the personal lives of the principal characters. As before, Emergency! concentrates on showing rescue and relief efforts, followed by medical treatment where necessary. Webb's insistence on scrupulous representations of actual procedures remains an important component of the series' success, of course. Our pick for the year's best episode is the season opener, "Virus," in which a deadly contagion threatens to spread like wildfire. Before it can be contained, Dr. Kelly Brackett (series star Robert Fuller) and Station 51's Johnny Gage (Randolph Mantooth) fall victim to it. Johnny's romantic life becomes the focal point of a couple of episodes; his partner Roy De Soto (Kevin Tighe) tries to fix him up in "Dinner Date," and Johnny finds himself attracted to a female police deputy in "Fuzz Lady." (The deputy in question is portrayed by Sharon Gless, who went on to play a cop in Cagney and Lacey). Rampart nurse Dixie McCall (series leading lady Julie London) finds her own heart going aflutter when an old flame, now a famous actor (Robert Alda), is admitted for emergency treatment in "Syndrome." During this season, Emergency! sticks to its three-subplots-per-hour formula, and while situations occasionally overlap or become repetitive, the episodes maintain a pretty high entertainment average.

This was one of the best tv shows I remember watching as a kid. I couldn't wait for next week's episode to be shown!!! To this day, this show has given me a great appreciation for firefighters and paramedics. Still a great show!!

I LOVED THIS SHOW AS A KID AND WAS DELIGHTED TO SEE IT IS AVAILABLE ON DVD. THIS SERIES IS A FAMILY FRIENDLY SHOW WITH ALL THE ACTION AND NONE OF THE GORE LIKE THE PRESENT DAY MEDICAL AND EMERGENCY SHOWS. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE ENTIRE SERIES.

I used to love watching the reruns of this series when I was a kid. Several friends of mine became paramedics or cops due to this series! Randolph Mantooth and Kevin Tighe worked well together: they made it seem real. Sure, the clothes are polyester scary and some of the acting is over the top, but it all adds up to great family entertainment.
