I love this movie! It may not be the perfect portrayal of the book Emma, but they capture the allure of Jane Austens book so perfectly. All of the characters did a superb job. Gwyneth Paltrow was the perfect Emma, and who could not fall in love with Northam playing Mr. Knightly? I highly recommend this movie to everyone who likes Jane Austen.
Most people like the Kate Beckinsale Emma a lot more than this one. I don't understand why, because that Emma wasn't very good. I did like Kate as Emma, but I like Gwyneth as Emma so much better.

I don't know what's with all the 5 stars. It's not a bad movie - I enjoyed and have watched it a few times. It's good. It's not great. And it's not the best version of Emma. If you haven't read the book - and I have - then you might find a few reactions or situations confusing. This movie doesn't explain it all that well. I really like Northam - he did a brilliant interpretation of Knightley. However, Paltrow seems like she didn't really understand the character of Emma - sometimes she did good, but other times it was just a disappointment. A movie should be good without having to base your understanding on what you read from the book - it should be self-explanatory. This one was not. My parents didn't read the book, and they enjoyed Kate Beckinsale's version much better. I recommend that one instead.

i don't understand complaints about this movie. It seemed to follow the book as much as a movie ever does and Gwyneth Paltrow was stunning as Emma, she made the movie outstanding.

This movie is hilarious and will keep you at the edge of seat trying to find out if Emma will get with Mr.Knightly (similar to the feeling from A&E's Pride and Predjudice). The movie is very funny and full of charm. One of the best I've ever seen.

I absolutely loved this movie! It was charming and adorable. You fall in love with the characters, and unlike other period pieces, this has both drama and humor, and a happy ending. You'll hit the bull's eye with this one!

Emma, a mischievous young woman, is determined to match-make her friends into marriage. This comedy tale, based on the novel by Jane Austen, teaches the consequences of dictating love in a humorous fashion. Emma continuely failed in match-making her friend Harriet, but also falls in love herself while learning to leave love in its own dictatorship. This movie is very comical, with many talented actors playing terrific roles.

I have only 3 words BUY THIS MOVIE! You will fall in love with everything in this movie.....including the actors! What can I say about Jeremy Northam.... he is fantastic in this movie portraying Mr.Knightly....sigh. ;-) Jane Austen must have had him in mind while writing about Mr.Knightly! Now lets not forget about Gwenyth Paltrow.... she makes the perfect Emma (I'm not saying that she is stuck up) but Gwenyth is marvelous as her. You will see it when you buy this movie. I have watched this movie at least 10 times since I have bought it! This is the best adaptation of Emma that is out there! So go now and buy this great memorizing movie!

This is a delightful adaption of Jane Austen's novel by the same name. It captures the wit that is so characteristic of Austen's satire while giving voice to her maze-like sentences that can easily lose you when seen in print. While Paltrow is an easily recognizable ''name'' in Hollywood, in this movie she becomes the twenty-something Emma. This is not simply a vehicle for a young star to put her face in the public eye; it is a faithful rendition of a classic Austen novel.

Though I have not read the Jane Austen novel, I thoroughly enjoyed this film adaption. For the most part, the acting was good and the sets were decent. Every now and then, a character would appear in a coat or a haircut that seemed out of place for the time period. Paltrow was well-suited for her role as Emma, a nosy but likeable "matchmaker." The dances performed in the film seemed to be taken from A&E's Pride and Prejudice a year earlier--of course, the time period is relatively the same, but Emma would have been better off not using the exact same dance and musical score. Although the quality of this film is not top-notch, I enjoyed it for the witty acting and light romance plot.

We replaced our current DVD with this Blu-ray. We were at first discouraged that it did not contain any extras such as a "making of" or interviews with cast members, but the Blu-ray version is still worth it. It's like looking at a new film, because we noticed so many more things such as the beauty of the sets and locations, and the actors' expressions. It was very enjoyable.

The 2009 version is pretty good, same with this one. Favorite moments are between Emma and Mr. Knightly and the dance scene. Started watching all these movies based on Jane Austen's books and they're so...romantic. When you get a chance, see this and the 2009 version of Emma and the book.

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.Although I wouldn't rank this quite as high as the Ang Lee adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, which moved me to tears, or the BBC Miniseries of Pride and Prejudice, which at times is laugh-out-loud funny, this still ranks a full five stars as an adaptation I thoroughly enjoyed and with which I can't find fault. It never strikes any false notes and the moment in particular where Emma embarrasses Miss Bates and Mr. Knightly upbraids I remember as particularly effective. Northam makes a wry, intelligent Mr Knightly and Paltrow invests Emma with just the right touch of...cluelessness. Ultimately this is a warm and amusing romance worthy of the material.

The colors were completely washed out. The detail was terrible. The disc was a disaster. I would have given it zero stars if the process would have permitted it. Buy the dvd until there is a major release of the disc.

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.Gwyneth Paltrow is unforgettable and stunning in her role as Emma, the society girl who's attempts at matchmaking are also unforgettable, as well as being (at times) laughable. Much of the book was carried very well into this film, and I love it for that. Austen's wit works into a script that is easy to understand and follow. I cried when Emma cried, laughed when she laughed, and also made hysterical matchmaking mistakes, and yelled at her for a full twenty minutes when she began to "fall in love" with the wrong man. As the movie ended and I thanked god that everything was right in her world, I realized that Emma is a perfect masterpiece.
