Overview

Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, a heartwarming holiday special from Jim Henson', comes to DVD with a full-frame transfer that faithfully reproduces the original aspect ratio. Like the VHS release, this version contains minor edits to the orginal 1977 broadcast. English soundtracks have been rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Surround, and Dolby Digital Stereo, while Spanish and French soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. Subtitles are accessible in all three of those languages as well. Supplemental materials include only bonus trailers, but the lack of extras can be overlooked because of the charming main feature.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Jim Henson’s puppet wizardry conjures up Frogtown Hollow, a pastoral Wind in the Willows-esque setting for Russell and Lillian Hoban’s Christmas-themed story of faith, sacrifice, and love. Emmet Otter and his widowed mother barely support themselves doing odd jobs, and the $50 grand prize offered in an upcoming holiday talent contest would afford each the opportunity to get the other an extravagant present. Readers of O. Henry’s "Gift of the Magi" can guess where this is heading, but Emmet Otter does manage a few surprises en route to its heartwarming conclusion. Paul Williams’s musical score is "otterly" delightful, and the visible strings supporting the all-puppet cast add their own retro charm. This DVD contains a segment about the making of Emmet Otter, the restoration of a lost song, and an amusing bloopers-and-outtakes section. Even without Kermit the Frog's original opening and closing appearances (seemingly a victim of pesky rights issues), Emmet Otter will, to quote one character, "leave you feeling pretty good."

A couple of years ago this was a gift, we returned it "to place of purchase" because of the editing done to it. They left out a song and changed the script! Originally, it was a Henson movie, Disney ruined it. Luckily I still have the original version I recorded off T.V. years ago.

This movie became a Christmas tradition after seeing it on HBO for the first time. I miss the introduction with Kermit but since it has been so long since I have seen it on HBO it hasn't ruined by enjoyment of the film. I missed it when HBO stopped playing it each year, it was like missing an old reliable friend. I have done my best to make it a favorite of the kids of today by passing it along to my friends with kids and grandkids. I will never tire of this movie! I wish the greatly talented Jim Henson was around today to make his impact on today's youth as he so richly and positively impacted my generation.

My twin sister and I have watched this movie at Christmas from the time we were 3 years old. We still get teary-eyed when we see Emmet and his washboard. This is a must see for us every Christmas and we are now approaching 30 years old...we will pass this tradition down to our own children.

For the life of me I could not remember the name of this movie! Here I am doing my Christmas shopping online and I came across Emmett Otter! I am sooo happy!! I haven't even received the movie yet but I give it 5+++++ stars! The Muppets Rock!!!

When I was really young, maybe 3, I remember seeing this on TV once. I remembered it every year at Christmas but was too young to remember the name. I would ask my parents what it was called and if we could watch it again, but they never knew exactly what I meant. I asked other kids my age growing up if they had ever seen it and none of them had a clue. My parents thought I had dreamed it, because it was impossible to remember something from 3 years old. So I am grown now and finally found it again. I was told it was discontinued so I'd never be able to own it though. But I love it, and have my first child on the way, and would love for him to have it. It's been years and I never forgot about it.

I am 73 years old and will order this amazing DVD for myself to enjoy again and again! It has always remained a wonderful memory I have shared with my daughter & son. Blessings to all, Barbara

Who is the wizard editor that took SEVERAL scenes/lines from the originally aired show? Ridiculous cuts were made in the very 2nd scene (as the first, which is the intro by Kermit the Frog, was completely omitted). Ma Otter says under her breath that Mrs. Fox could "fall off the dock," but not in this version. Why cut something that makes the next line make sense? I couldn't give this a lower star review as it is still an enchanting story but I am really put out that we now have to refer to this DVD as a "version" of what was a wonderful classic prior to re-editing.

My husband and I saw this so many years ago and we enjoyed it just as much since buying the DVD. The DVD arrived faster than expected and despite other negative reviews I had read about "what Disney did to this movie," we have no complaints. The story is as charming as ever and the songs will stick in your head, they are so memorable. It is a great holiday movie!

...Used to tour with the RiverBottom back in the 70's. These guys sure know how to pack a venue. I remember when they opened up for Skynard...Man they must have each done 25 hits of acid, but my kids enjoyed the show almost as much and me and the wife.

This was such a cool movie. Especially the Riverbottom Nightmare Band. I even have my 3 year hooked on saying ''Look at the birds up in the tree''. I have loved this movie since the first time that I saw it and had looked for it for years. Now I have found it and will add it to my collection. My copy on VHS has died. I recorded it back in 1985.

We've watched this movie every Christmas for as long as I can remember - it's a family holiday tradition that I hope I can pass to my kids one day. (Our video is finally beginning to show it's age... Thank goodness that it's come to DVD!!!) ^_^!

This show is so good. I have watched it every Christmas of my life and can't wait to own it. Even my friends at college sit around when we're bored and sing ''And a mess of momma's barbecue....''

Can't imagine our Christmas Eve gathering without Emmet and Ma. My children begin reminding me at Thanksgiving it's almost time for Emmet. A great film to pass on.

My children are in their late 20's now, but I can easily reflect back to their watching Emmet Otter over and over again. They had viewed their VHS enough that they had MEMORIZED the lines. It was a wonderful time in our lives....such sweet memories
