Featuring a heart-warming story, the trademark Jim Henson wit, and beautiful songs, Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas originally aired as an HBO special. The story is a spin on the classic "Gift of the Magi," with the impoverished Emmet and his Ma each making a sacrifice in the hopes that it will help them win the yearly talent show, and enough money to buy the other a Christmas gift. Purists, take note: There have been multiple edits of Emmet Otter released over the years, with minor but noticible changes to dialogue, and the addition
emoval of scenes featuring Kermit the Frog.

A couple of years ago this was a gift, we returned it "to place of purchase" because of the editing done to it. They left out a song and changed the script! Originally, it was a Henson movie, Disney ruined it. Luckily I still have the original version I recorded off T.V. years ago.
This movie became a Christmas tradition after seeing it on HBO for the first time. I miss the introduction with Kermit but since it has been so long since I have seen it on HBO it hasn't ruined by enjoyment of the film. I missed it when HBO stopped playing it each year, it was like missing an old reliable friend. I have done my best to make it a favorite of the kids of today by passing it along to my friends with kids and grandkids. I will never tire of this movie! I wish the greatly talented Jim Henson was around today to make his impact on today's youth as he so richly and positively impacted my generation.
Who is the wizard editor that took SEVERAL scenes/lines from the originally aired show? Ridiculous cuts were made in the very 2nd scene (as the first, which is the intro by Kermit the Frog, was completely omitted). Ma Otter says under her breath that Mrs. Fox could "fall off the dock," but not in this version. Why cut something that makes the next line make sense? I couldn't give this a lower star review as it is still an enchanting story but I am really put out that we now have to refer to this DVD as a "version" of what was a wonderful classic prior to re-editing.
When I was really young, maybe 3, I remember seeing this on TV once. I remembered it every year at Christmas but was too young to remember the name. I would ask my parents what it was called and if we could watch it again, but they never knew exactly what I meant. I asked other kids my age growing up if they had ever seen it and none of them had a clue. My parents thought I had dreamed it, because it was impossible to remember something from 3 years old. So I am grown now and finally found it again. I was told it was discontinued so I'd never be able to own it though. But I love it, and have my first child on the way, and would love for him to have it. It's been years and I never forgot about it.
I am 73 years old and will order this amazing DVD for myself to enjoy again and again! It has always remained a wonderful memory I have shared with my daughter & son. Blessings to all, Barbara
For the life of me I could not remember the name of this movie! Here I am doing my Christmas shopping online and I came across Emmett Otter! I am sooo happy!! I haven't even received the movie yet but I give it 5+++++ stars! The Muppets Rock!!!
My twin sister and I have watched this movie at Christmas from the time we were 3 years old. We still get teary-eyed when we see Emmet and his washboard. This is a must see for us every Christmas and we are now approaching 30 years old...we will pass this tradition down to our own children.
My husband and I saw this so many years ago and we enjoyed it just as much since buying the DVD. The DVD arrived faster than expected and despite other negative reviews I had read about "what Disney did to this movie," we have no complaints. The story is as charming as ever and the songs will stick in your head, they are so memorable. It is a great holiday movie!
I am 54 years old and I enjoy this christmas movie better then anyone out there !
I can't believe this incredible movie was so hard to find! It really is the BEST Christmas movie and after hundreds of viewings, it is still fun to watch. Don't miss this classic treasure.. you won't be sorry.. and the music ROCKS!
Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas is a humble tear-jerker for both children and adults alike. The charming characters, good story and heart warming lesson will win over your heart forever. Emmet is a classic in our house. Buy it now! Enjoy!
We've watched this movie every Christmas for as long as I can remember - it's a family holiday tradition that I hope I can pass to my kids one day. (Our video is finally beginning to show it's age... Thank goodness that it's come to DVD!!!) ^_^!
My children are in their late 20's now, but I can easily reflect back to their watching Emmet Otter over and over again. They had viewed their VHS enough that they had MEMORIZED the lines. It was a wonderful time in our lives....such sweet memories
Emmet is great.... anybody who is anybody loves this movie. It is not christmas unless you watch this movie...I grew up watching it as will my children will grow up watching it. I will recommend this movie to anybody, young or old.
WOW! Emmet Otter on DVD. All I can say is ''THIS IS THE BEST X-MAS MOVIE EVER'' And I really mean that! I wish I could give more stars
I remember seeing this on HBO in the early 80's and it became a family favorite. This came out on DVD in 2001 and that version includes Kermit's appearance. This version is slightly edited but the extra stuff added that was not part of the 2001 release makes it worth the buy.
I grew up on this movie and still love it to this day. Its a shame it doesnt play as much as it did in the early 80's.
Can't imagine our Christmas Eve gathering without Emmet and Ma. My children begin reminding me at Thanksgiving it's almost time for Emmet. A great film to pass on.
WOW! I REMEMBER THIS WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL I'M ONLY 32 BUT I SURE DO REMEMBER THIS IT WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITES.JUST THE TRUE MEANING BEHIND IT:).I'M BUYING IT FOR MY FIRST CHILD AS I NO HE WILL LOVE IT BECAUSE OF THE MUSIC.
This is a great family movie. My brother and I watched it as kids during the Christmas season and each year we would watch for it to come on. I am going to order it as a gift for my brother and one for myself, too! The story is great and the detail that went into each little puppet and their environment is astounding. The music and the singing are both fascinating, also. You cannot go wrong with this movie!
