Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Jim Henson’s puppet wizardry conjures up Frogtown Hollow, a pastoral Wind in the Willows-esque setting for Russell and Lillian Hoban’s Christmas-themed story of faith, sacrifice, and love. Emmet Otter and his widowed mother barely support themselves doing odd jobs, and the $50 grand prize offered in an upcoming holiday talent contest would afford each the opportunity to get the other an extravagant present. Readers of O. Henry’s "Gift of the Magi" can guess where this is heading, but Emmet Otter does manage a few surprises en route to its heartwarming conclusion. Paul Williams’s musical score is "otterly" delightful, and the visible strings supporting the all-puppet cast add their own retro charm. This DVD contains a segment about the making of Emmet Otter, the restoration of a lost song, and an amusing bloopers-and-outtakes section. Even without Kermit the Frog's original opening and closing appearances (seemingly a victim of pesky rights issues), Emmet Otter will, to quote one character, "leave you feeling pretty good."

    Disney ruined it...

A couple of years ago this was a gift, we returned it "to place of purchase" because of the editing done to it. They left out a song and changed the script! Originally, it was a Henson movie, Disney ruined it. Luckily I still have the original version I recorded off T.V. years ago.

    Great Christmas Memory

This movie became a Christmas tradition after seeing it on HBO for the first time. I miss the introduction with Kermit but since it has been so long since I have seen it on HBO it hasn't ruined by enjoyment of the film. I missed it when HBO stopped playing it each year, it was like missing an old reliable friend. I have done my best to make it a favorite of the kids of today by passing it along to my friends with kids and grandkids. I will never tire of this movie! I wish the greatly talented Jim Henson was around today to make his impact on today's youth as he so richly and positively impacted my generation.

    Great memory from childhood BUT

Who is the wizard editor that took SEVERAL scenes/lines from the originally aired show? Ridiculous cuts were made in the very 2nd scene (as the first, which is the intro by Kermit the Frog, was completely omitted). Ma Otter says under her breath that Mrs. Fox could "fall off the dock," but not in this version. Why cut something that makes the next line make sense? I couldn't give this a lower star review as it is still an enchanting story but I am really put out that we now have to refer to this DVD as a "version" of what was a wonderful classic prior to re-editing.

    Been searching for years

When I was really young, maybe 3, I remember seeing this on TV once. I remembered it every year at Christmas but was too young to remember the name. I would ask my parents what it was called and if we could watch it again, but they never knew exactly what I meant. I asked other kids my age growing up if they had ever seen it and none of them had a clue. My parents thought I had dreamed it, because it was impossible to remember something from 3 years old. So I am grown now and finally found it again. I was told it was discontinued so I'd never be able to own it though. But I love it, and have my first child on the way, and would love for him to have it. It's been years and I never forgot about it.

    A True Classic

My twin sister and I have watched this movie at Christmas from the time we were 3 years old. We still get teary-eyed when we see Emmet and his washboard. This is a must see for us every Christmas and we are now approaching 30 years old...we will pass this tradition down to our own children.

    A must have for Christmas

If you don't share this with your kids and friends you are missing out. We first saw it on TV years ago and recorded it on our VCR. The DVD version is much better and the songs and characters are unforgetable and rememberable...there is a difference you know?

    Great movie!

My mother (in her 70's) asked me to locate this after viewing with a group. She was sure I wouldn't find it, but there it was at Barnes & Noble after trying at least 4 other retailers. She has watched and enoyed it several times with grandchildren and by herself. The characters are very entertaining and Jim Henson's creativity is a marvel. A great tradition for holiday time and just plain fun any time.

Best Christmas Movie of All Time

Last Christmas, a friend sent me an email survey with questions about the holiday season and one of the questions was about what I thought was the best Christmas movie. I had to think about all the movies I had seen and my mind went back to when I was a kid. I smiled when I thought of this movie. I answered with this one and went right to B&N and bought this copy to re-see it. Better yet to know that there are no kids in the house to see it with. It is just plain fun. :-)

    A reviewer

I think we're all in agreement here that Emmet Otter is a Henson holiday masterpiece. And it's DVD treatment is wonderful. So, when do we get a chance to enjoy "The Christmas Toy" on DVD?!? It's a lesser known, but almost as sweet special turned out by the Henson folks in the 80's. Come on guys, don't leave us hanging!!!

    Almost forgotten classic

I remember seeing this on HBO in the early 80's and it became a family favorite. This came out on DVD in 2001 and that version includes Kermit's appearance. This version is slightly edited but the extra stuff added that was not part of the 2001 release makes it worth the buy.

    Disappointed

This was my favorite movie growing up. I was disappointed with the content in the special features section. I thought that this would be a great movie for my kids but I was wrong.

    A Classic for all ages!

They used to play this on HBO every year when I was a kid and I wish they would still play it. It's certainly worth purchasing for the kids. A wonderful musical that you will love from the moment you watch it.

    The Muppets RULE!!!!!!

As a muppet fan, I may be prejudiced, but I think that this is possibly the BEST work to ever come out of the Henson studios. The story line is great, the music is TERRIFIC, and it appeals to all age groups! I usually have to buy one or two of these every year, as original gifts, or replacements for worn-out gifts!

    EMMET IS FINALLY ON DVD

I was at age 6 in 1977 when I first saw this. It is timeless. This is classic Jim Henson at his best. I hope for many generations this Christmas special will be enjoyed by everyone. Jim would have loved to know that EEJBC is more popular than before.

One of my Favorite Holiday Movies

I remember seeing this movie on cable when I was a little girl. I recently got the chance to pick it up and pop it in the VCR whenever I feel the need to see it (possibly in July :)if the weather is hot and this will bring back childhood memories!!!
