Emperor of the North

Overview

Despite its catalog title status, Emperor of the North has received a nice treatment on this DVD from Fox. It offers a letterboxed, anamorphic transfer that has been handsomely remastered; the film's earthy color scheme comes through in vivid style and the level of details is often stunning. The audio portion of the disc offers the film's original mono mix and a stereo remix; the stereo remix isn't too different from the mono track, but both are solid, well-rendered soundtracks. In terms of extras, the disc ...

The audio portion of the disc offers the film's original mono mix and a stereo remix; the stereo remix isn't too different from the mono track, but both are solid, well-rendered soundtracks. In terms of extras, the disc offers a trio of coming attractions for the film one theatrical trailer, two television spots and a commentary by New York-based film studies professor Dana Polan. The commentary offers a steady stream of analytical observations regarding the film's mythical take on its subject and the many themes running beneath its adventure story plotline. Even if one doesn't agree with all of Polan's ideas, he offers plenty of interesting food for thought particularly his take on the film's Cigaret character as a sort of commentary on youth culture. All in all, this disc represents Emperor of the North well and is an excellent deal for its reasonable price.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Often overlooked, this is an excellent period adventure and one of Robert Aldrich's best latter-day efforts. Emperor of the North benefits from a smart Christopher Knopf script; it is packed with vivid details that bring its train yard setting to life and plenty of salty, convincing tough-guy dialogue. Aldrich brings the tricky, train-bound narrative life with a true craftsman's skill, deftly orchestrating the many complex set pieces involving trains so they offer maximum excitement. It's also worth noting that Aldrich's work is aided immensely by Joseph Biroc's richly detailed cinematography and the razor-sharp precision of Michael Luciano's editing. Finally, the film boasts three magnificent performances that really bring the tale to life; Lee Marvin is effortlessly convincing as macho man of the earth A No. 1, Keith Carradine is amusingly snotty as his reluctant pupil, Cigaret, and Ernest Borgnine is terrifying as the sadistic, single-minded Shack. It all adds up to a magnificent "guy's movie" that is well worth the time for anyone interested in Aldrich's work and connoisseurs of macho cinema in general.
