Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Steve Futterman
Maybe it was the symbolic location -- Chicago, the birthplace and spiritual home of urban blues music -- but the second Crossroads Guitar Festival saw more than its share of intense, deeply expressive playing from the cream of the world’s most popular and influential guitarists. A benefit concert for host Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Centre in Antigua, the July 28 extravaganza saw gifted axe men displaying their regal chops and then, as an added bonus, playing with their peers and idols. Some of the most impressive performances of the day are captured on this double-disc set, which features over four hours of music. Legendary guitarists representing the blues (B. B. King, Buddy Guy, Hubert Sumlin) mingle with contemporary rockers (John Mayer, Doyle Bramhall II, Derek Trucks), country and pop stars (Willie Nelson, Vince Gill, Sheryl Crow), blues-rock giants (Clapton, Robert Cray, Johnny Winter, Jeff Beck, Robbie Robertson, Jimmie Vaughan), and assorted virtuosos and iconic bands including John McLaughlin, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Los Lobos, and Albert Lee. The historic reunion of Clapton and Steve Winwood revisiting Blind Faith anthems, as well as a grooving “Sweet Home Chicago” uniting Buddy Guy with Clapton, Cray, Mayer, Sumlin, Vaughan, and Winter, are just two of the more memorable encounters from a day jam-packed with high-quality jamming.

Look at the line up and the song list. It doesn't get much better than this.

    I Also Recommend:

    Guitar Heaven

Jeff Beck's sizzling performance with a stellar new band including the wonderful Tal Wilkenfeld on bass.
Eric Clapton, the coolest geezer rocker of them all, onstage with a powerhouse band (Derek Trucks!) and singing and playing with real passion and conviction.
Willie Nelson singing "Blue Eyes Crying"...
    Lots of great performances.
I don't always like the editing. There are times I would have chosen different things to focus on. Bill Murray I definitely could have done without. But when it's good, it's terrific. I highly recommend this DVD.

    Enjoyable

It's obvious the film makers had a lot of footage to go and I'll bet some of the better sets ended up on the editing room floor. Great performances by Johnny Winter, Vince Gill, B.B. King and Steve Winwood.
