A mix of romance, fantasy, giant robot action, and tarot-card slinging mysticism, this 26 episode 1996 TV series seems to have something to offer all kinds of anime fans regardless of gender or demographic. It's no surprise then that Escaflowne is now regarded as something classic and even spawned a theatrical feature film in 2000. Partially created by Shoji Kawamori of Macross Plus fame, the story follows the adventures and heartstrings of a normal girl named Hiromi who, after meeting the mysterious handsome Prince Van, journeys to an alternate Earth named Gaea. Soon feudal politics, family secrets, and power struggles in Van's kingdom of Fanelia escalate into an all-out war where Hiromi must command a robot-like giant suit of living armor called Escaflowne. While the story may sound like a stock sword-and-sorcery tale, the various shifts of genre and constant plot twists keep the proceeds continually fresh and engrossing. Recently broadcast on Fox Kids in a dubbed and truncated form, Bandai's DVD releases restore Escaflowne to its original form with top notch picture and sound quality. Volk Lindsay

Escaflowne is anime at its best. Combining luscious backgrounds, stunning animation, amazing music, great indepth characters, and cool directing skills by Kazuki Akane, Escaflowne is the story of a girl and her relationships in the world of Gaia. Hitomi is a young freshman who gets pulled to the world of Gaia and meets the young king Van, whose kingdom is fried by evil psycho albino Dilandau, a member of Zaibach, which is headed by Folken-Van's elder brother. Needless to say, the story is intricate enough to hold anyone's attention for all 26 episodes. My personal favorite of the series is the astounding music by Yoko Kanno (Macrosse Plus, Cowboy BeBop). Any anime lovers, from Sailor Moonies to hardcore Ninja Scroll fans will enjoy this series. It includes some great mecha, including the title guymelef, Escaflowne and some great detail. This is one of the most epic animes of all time. Enjoy!

This is my favorite anime of all time. It's beautifully done with an awesome soundtrack and detailed animation. The story has the perfect mix of fighting, adventure and just a hint of romance with a heroine that people can relate to (even if she does faint quite alot). plus this is the full version instead of the horrible hack job the stuck on TV.
