Essentials Director Series: Jean-Luc Godard Collection

Overview

While Jean-Luc Godard's best and best-known work clearly comes from a specific time and place -- namely the Sixties, when both art and society were in a state of upheaval and so much in the world seemed up for grabs -- the technique and the thought behind his films has dated remarkably little, and the four works in this box set (three of which date from the early Sixties, with one from 2004) may not all represent the director at his best, but they surely reflect a vision that could come from no other filmmaker. Essentials: Directors Series -- Jean-Luc Godard includes the films Breathless (1960), Le Petit Soldat (1960), Les Carabiniers (1963) and Notre Musique (2004), and all four movies have been transferred to disc in their original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The transfers look uniformly strong and remain faithful to the visual style of the individual films. The audio for all four pictures has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo, except for Notre Musique which includes tracks in both Dolby Digital Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1, and the quality is fine given the standards of the time when the films were shot. All the pictures are primarily in French, and include optional English subtitles. The three films made in the Sixties (which Fox Lorber released in a box set in 2001) all include filmographies for Godard and the stars of each movies, as well as an identical set of internet web links; Le Petit Soldat and Les Carabiniers also include informative short talks on the films (illustrated with film clips) from critic and film historian David Sterritt, while Breathless features a full-length commentary by Sterritt, which unfortunately feels a little too light for its own good. Notre Musique, meanwhile, features the film's original theatrical trailer, previews for other titles from Wellspring Releasing, and a partial filmography for Godard. All four of the discs included in Directors Series -- Jean-Luc Godard can be purchased separately, but cineastes interested in filling out their Godard collections can save some money buy picking up this set, which features one masterpiece (Breathless) and three worthy works from a true original of the cinema.
