Overview

This stylish exploitation vehicle from cult hero Jess Franco has been brought to DVD by Blue Underground with its typical blend of care and gusto. Eugenie...The Story of her Journey Into Perversion has been transferred to disc in letterboxed format at the widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The transfer is, for the most part, colorful and well-detailed, though the red-tinted orgy sequences sometimes look a bit foggy. Viewers can choose between two audio tracks, both in Dolby Digital Mono: an English soundtrack that allows one to hear Christopher Lee's original performance or a French track which favors the rest of the cast. (Optional English titles are also available.) Given the source material, both tracks sound quite strong and make the most of Bruno Nicolai's faux-exotic score. Bonus materials include an amusing short documentary on the making of the film (including interviews with Franco, stars Christopher Lee and Marie Liljedahl, and producer Harry Alan Towers); a text biography of Franco; the film's original trailer; and a gallery of production photos and advertising artwork. This is a well-appointed release that should please fans of the idiosyncratic Franco and confirms Blue Underground's status as a video company that knows how to treat classic exploitation films with the care and respect most labels save for top-of-the-shelf "prestige" releases.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Mark Deming
One of Jess Franco's earlier efforts at bringing the work of the Marquis de Sade to the screen (with many more to follow), Die Jungfrau und die Peitsche is rather subdued by Franco's standards, though it has enough nudity, decadence, and pretty people doing awful things to satisfy the vast majority of his fans. Die Jungfrau und die Peitsche (released in the United States as Eugenie: The Story of Her Journey Into Perversion) features plenty of lovely scenery and pleasing sequences of the idle rich enjoying themselves to balance out the lurid and enthusiastic torture sequences, though most of them are mildly creepy rather than bloodcurdling. Christopher Lee's all too brief supporting performance as master sadist Dolmance hits all the right notes (though it's not hard to believe his claims that the nudity was all filmed after his departure, so he wasn't aware of the full level of debauchery he was witnessing), and Maria Rohm and Jack Taylor are a fine pair of creepy, if attractive, libertines. Marie Liljedahl, however, takes top honors as the defiled innocent Eugenie, who walks an appropriate line between schoolgirl charm and ripe sexuality -- scoring impressively on both sides. Die Jungfrau und die Peitsche may be sleaze, but it's sleaze with style, delivering kinky softcore sex and amusingly pretentious philosophizing in amusingly equal measure.
