In flashback, the story then focuses on eight-year-old Danielle, daughter of a wealthy widower, a 16th-century landowner. After returning to France with his new wife Rodmilla Anjelica Huston and her two daughters, he dies of a heart attack. Ten years later, Danielle Drew Barrymore is now treated as a servant by the trio. Fortunately, she has an encounter with Prince Henry Dougray Scott, who is fleeing an arranged marriage. Later, when Danielle poses as a Lady, the Prince takes an interest in her. Inventor-artist Leonardo da Vinci Patrick Godfrey, accepting the French court's patronage, offers advice to Prince Henry on matters of the heart. George Fenton's music adds an accompaniment to the lush look of this period romance.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jason Clark
There isn't much to improve upon when dealing with a classic fairy tale, but surprisingly, this charming (if slightly overlong) update of the Cinderella story has a good deal to offer even those completely familiar with its tried and true yarn. Beautifully photographed in Super-35 on location in France, with pitch-perfect production design, Ever After succeeds in creating something with a modern bent while still retaining the core of integrity that makes its story continue to resonate. Drew Barrymore is far too contemporary for the lead role, but her effortless charisma carries the film regardless, and the supporting cast is expertly chosen, with a suitably dashing Dougray Scott and wonderfully sneer-worthy Anjelica Huston standing out among many apt performances. The movie doesn't fully capitalize on its strengths, and Andy Tennant's direction is suitable but unsurprising; still, the film is classy, straightforward entertainment and designed to please. Its video version has been rated PG, seemingly with a few trims to make it even more family friendly.

    A reviewer

I teach 8th ngrade French, so Ever After, shown in French with English subtitles, is a perfect choice for my students. It's set in 16th century France with some beautiful chateaux in evidence. Not only do the girls love it, but the boys can identify with the prince, with Leonardo DaVinci and with the strong character of Danielle. I, too, have no problem showing this film to 13 and 14 year olds. There is maybe one scene that is at all iffy (with M. LePieu), but it comes and goes quickly and it shows the strength and independence of the heroine. This movie is at the top of my list for adolescents as well as adults.

    Watch it over and over

I have watched this movie many times. I have it in the DVD player in my sewing room and play it a lot. The music is nice, the story gives a little twist now and then to the old favorite. Any age would love this story.

    Ever After

Ever After is a truly beautiful and finally triumphant love story,Full of adventure, romance and wit.It is set in 16 century France and the story revolves around Danielle who after her father passed away when she was eight, was treated like a servant by her evil and scheming stepmother. She also has two step sisters, one's in league with the stepmother to get the prince but the other helps Danielle as much as she can.Despite all this this,Danielle still manages to work miracles to everyone around her even the crown prince of France,Eventually he falls for her....But complications arise.

This movie is awesome! It just makes me feel good; like one person can make a difference: in her own life, in someone's else's life, in the world. I love love stories, and happy endings.

    The Sweetest Story Ever Told

For most women, there are two stories that we all identify with: Pride and Prejudice and Cinderella. It became a tradition for my family that anytime we would visist my aunt, we would watch Ever After. The dashing colors, the beautiful script, and the luscious acting weave a most touching and beautiful story. It's almost good enough to eat. I loved the easy French backdrop to the story-it creates an enchanting glow to the timeless story. Ever After should be the Casablanca to the next generations. It is truly a story worth remembering.

    The Perfect Cinderella Story

Although we've all heard the Cinderella story many times, this version makes it feel fresh and new again. Unlike some Cinderella stories, "Ever After" has a complex and spirited heroine, lush costumes and settings, and more romance. The only other Cinderella tale I think of that's as perfect as this is "Ella Enchanted" (the book, not the movie). Even though "Ever After" is rated PG-13, it's totally family-friendly and should be loved by all Cinderellas.

    Ever After

This movie is good and has wonderful music and the costumes are magnificent like Danielle's dress with the faerie wings near the middle of the movie where she goes to a ball. This movie is wonderful and Drew Barrymoore gives a wonderful performance.

    Amazing!

This is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen! This is one movie you could watch over and over again and never get tired of it. I would recommend this masterpiece to anyone! I have seen this movie at least 10 times and I still cry. I would mostly recommend this movie to young teens, though the movie is suitable for all ages. The acting in this movie is marvelous and I am a big fan of Drew Barrymore. You would be stupid to not to go buy this movie!
