Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The most popular network sitcoms to come down the pike since Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond was created as a showcase for stand-up comedian Ray Romano, whose wry observations on family life were the core of his popular nightclub act. Ironically, the show has become famous as an ensemble piece, and justifiably so: Few sitcoms maintain such a delicate balance, and so carefully distribute laugh lines, among the cast members. This five-disc box set collects all the episodes of the first season 1996-97, which may not be as uniformly excellent as the series' subsequent year but still score more frequently than they miss. From the first, Romano seemed very comfortable in the role of Ray Barone, the New York-based sportswriter who lives on Long Island with wife Debra Patricia Heaton and three kids -- and just across the street from his parents, Marie Doris Roberts and Frank Peter Boyle, and his unmarried older brother, Robert Brad Garrett. The first season featured guest appearances by such sports figures as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Terry Bradshaw, a gimmick that went by the wayside once the cast settled into the characters and developed a winning rapport. Among the most memorable shows here are: "Turkey or Fish" a Thanksgiving episode like none other in sitcom history; "Debra's Sick," wherein Ray must play Mr. Mom after Debra comes down with the flu; "Frank, the Writer," in which Frank, after getting an anecdote published in Reader's Digest, thinks Ray's editor should let him do a column; and the classic "I Love You," in which Debra speaks for many American wives in wondering aloud why her husband finds it so difficult to utter those three little words. Later seasons would more fully exploit the comic aspects of Debra's ongoing quarrels with Marie, Frank's passive-aggressive approach to mediating family conflicts, and Robert's relationship difficulties. But the seeds were definitely planted in the first year's episodes, and by watching them again it's easy to understand how they eventually blossomed into the fabulous show Raymond is today.

    It Will Run Forever!

Why does 'Everybody Love Raymond?' Because everything about the series is first-rate: The concept, the cast, the writing, the direction, et al... all, in a word, GREAT! Though the show will end its 'first-runs' in 2005, 'Everybody Loves Raymond' will, I believe, be on the air forever... joining the Andy Griffiths, the Dick Van Dykes, the Lucys, and a handful of other 'shows for the ages.'
