Everyone knows the old Andy Warhol saw about everyone being famous for 15 minutes. In Dominique Deruddere's lighthearted romp, a bottle factory worker shoots for more than that -- with unexpected results. Jean (Josse de Pauw) is a songwriter of sorts, obsessively working to craft the perfect top 40 tune that will catapult his overweight daughter Marva (Eva Van Der Gucht in a poignantly awkward turn) into superstardom. Marva resentfully goes along with this dream, but as her weight increases and she becomes increasingly resistant to her father's dream. Laid off from the bottling factory, Jean's pipe dream turns into a comically chaotic obsession when he kidnaps the mono-named, electric blue-haired Debbie (Thekla Reuten), the most popular singer in the Netherlands. Pauw and Van Der Gucht strike just the right note of wistful longing as they first clash and then come together in their quest for fame. By the movie's end when everybody's famous, you'll be cheering as well. Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2000.
