Overview

Returning to his action feature terrain after a short hiatus, Steven Seagal plays Orin Boyd, a maverick Detroit detective with an unconventional way of taking down foes. After a failed intervention in a terrorist kidnapping case that humiliates his superiors, Boyd -- who is hailed as a top-drawer investigator but frowned upon for his tactics -- is forced to do time in a tough downtown precinct. After discovering the covert drug operation performed by several corrupt cops at his new assignment, he decides to break the rules yet again. While the cops are planning a massive heroin deal with big-time gangster Latrell Walker DMX, Boyd finds that Latrell is not who he once was, and Boyd persuades him to assist in bringing an end to the amoral police influence that helped ruin him. Exit Wounds is the second film from cinematographer-turned-director Andrzej Bartkowiak Romeo Must Die and also features Tom Arnold, Isaiah Washington, and Jill Hennessy.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Martial-arts master Steven Seagal, absent from the screen for three years, makes a dynamic comeback in this searing thriller produced by legendary action-film specialist Joel Silver. Seagal is cast in a familiar role: a no-nonsense police detective who acts on instinct and has little regard for the niceties of due process. His impulsive behavior finally earns him a demotion and reassignment to one of Detroit's toughest precincts, where he uncovers vast corruption and smashes a drug-dealing operation masterminded by crooked cop Isaiah Washington. Seagal remains the same soft-spoken, squinty-eyed, long-legged fighting machine his fans have learned to love, and while not quite the lithe panther he was in his earlier films, he still acquits himself handily in several bone-crunching battles. Director Andrzej Bartkowiak Romeo Must Die lends assistance by shooting the fight sequences from odd angles and editing them in a way that helps conceal the star's weight gain and concomitant lack of mobility. Silver's glossy production doesn't stint on anything, so action lovers will find ample quantities of car chases, shootouts, and explosions herein. Seagal's films usually don't have strong stories, but Exit Wounds will prove pleasantly surprising in that regard, too; watch for leading lady Jill Hennessy to figure prominently in a shocking plot twist. Head and shoulders above Seagal's recent vehicles, Exit Wounds is a violent, fast-moving, altogether effective action melodrama. The DVD features a behind-the-scene documentary, a day-on-the-set featurette with supporting player Anthony Anderson, and a music video featuring the DMX cover of "Ain't No Sunshine," used in both the film and its trailer.
All Movie Guide
Hitmakers Joel Silver (The Matrix) and Andrzej Bartkowiak (Romeo Must Die) joined forces to resurrect Steven Seagal in this oddly witty, entertaining movie. Exit Wounds slyly helps the aged, slow Seagal ease right back into the action genre. Orin Boyd, Seagal's maverick police tough guy, is pigeon-toed, double-chinned, and more than a little over-the-hill. He is repeatedly chastised. He is perennially demoted. He is ordered to take an anger management class with other cynical, irascible, underappreciated white males, and forced to obey a sassy lady commander. He is simply a grown-up, beat-up, grumpier version of all the iconoclastic bone-crushing heroes of Seagal's past. While fondly remembered for beating a suspect unconscious with a cat, Orin is really just a rebellious pain in the rear. However, when a jolly red helicopter marked "Have a Nice Day" starts gunning down half the police force, it becomes apparent that Orin's pessimism is not so unfounded. He eventually hones his anger and impudence into great aikido, satisfying sarcasm, and everything else for which Seagal is famous. Look for when Seagal as Orin interrupts his commander's romantic dinner, banishes her boyfriend, and then brazenly eats from his plate -- only eliciting a coy, aroused smile from the lady. Seagal is back, baby, and no one's complaining.
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman
In its low grade way, this blithely brutal cops and drugs thriller is an efficient hot wire entertainment.
