Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's Extras is not just another day at The Office. It's more inside and less universally relatable, but it is often as funny and cringe-worthy as its illustrious predecessor. Gervais stars as Andy, a movie extra, or, as he likes to call himself, a "background artist." Although he insists he is a proper actor, Andy is not so much delusional -- in the mold of clueless Office boss David Brent -- as he is desperate for his big break, which he invariably manages to sabotage at every opportunity. As with Jerry on Seinfeld, the shallow and tactless Andy is not the most likable character. Andy has his own George Costanza character in Maggie Ashley Jensen, a fellow extra who is similarly hapless when it comes to relationships. Merchant is also hilarious as Andy's "fool for an agent." What gives this series a little something extra are the subversive turns by its A-list guest stars. Kate Winslet is shockingly funny as herself portraying a nun in a Holocaust drama, whether giving the repressed Maggie phone sex tips to engage her new boyfriend or confiding to Andy that appearing in a Holocaust film is the ticket to a "bloody Oscar." It's also hard to beat Captain Picard as a pervert: Patrick Stewart makes it so when he shares with Andy his screenplay for a proposed film about a man who uses his telekinetic powers to make women's clothes fall off. At a mere six episodes, Extras leaves viewers eager for Season 2, especially with Andy at a surprisingly promising career crossroads. And speaking of "extras," this two-disc set contains deleted scenes, bloopers, and a behind-the-scenes featurette.
