Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
Originally aired by the BBC in 1974, this 13-part miniseries depicts the period during the mid-19th century in which the royal families of Austria-Hungary, Russia, and Germany dominated Europe. By the dawn of the 20th century, however, political uprisings and societal change led to a tumultuous upheaval in the once-decadent lives of the Hapsburgs, Romanovs, and Hohenzollerns, resulting in the end of their monarchical rule. Covering over 60 years in the course of its 13 episodes, Fall of Eagles takes what could have been a dry history lesson and instead fashions an engrossing tale of family, loyalty, betrayal, and, ultimately, destruction. A cast of hundreds -- along with the typical BBC eye for period drama -- brings Fall of Eagles to life. Starring notable actors such as Michael Kitchen, Gemma Jones, Robert Brown, Miriam Margoyles, John Rhys-Davies, and Patrick Stewart as a remarkably believable Vladimir Lenin, Fall of Eagles merits consideration among the very best BBC miniseries of its time.

When collecting movies, I look for artistic productions that can be enjoyed many times. This series definitely fits that description. I've watched it three times in the past two years and have learned something new each time. The complicated events that led to WWI are never easy to sort through, but this series has helped me understand a bit more about it. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in European history and good acting!

The word excellent does not even begin to describe this series. The attention to detail, costumes, script ... I sat and watched all 13 episodes in one day!!! For anyone who is a lover of history, especially royal european history this is a must!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting insights into the 'kitchen-details' of the subject material. Very similar to I Claudius, and in fact, shares many actors. When's the last time you saw sympathetic portrayals of both the Kaiser and Lenin?

This DVD is one of the worst I've ever tried to watch. The story line is discontinuous and illogical, the volume fluctuates so that you can't hear some conversations, the battles are presented in the form of hokey drawings that are moved around a little and the acting is horrible.

Packed with intimate historic information, spell binding and very informative. If you are a lover of history but like to hear the human nature of things, this is the story for you. I viewed in two days and could not wait to view the next segment.
