Overview

Don Fedderson's hit series Family Affair, which ran for five years on CBS, has arrived on DVD from MPI in a handsome five-disc set covering the program's complete first season. The 30 episodes all look to be in fine shape, their color intact and bright and filled with rich detail, right down to the texture of the clothes worn by the actors, and a healthy volume level on the audio. Each disc opens automatically to a main menu recreating the kaleidoscope design of the show's opening credits, and offering an easy-to-use selection of commands, with the "play all" option in the default position. Disc five contains the set's one bonus feature, a delightful 20-minute featurette on the development of the series and its history, hosted by co-star Kathy Garver, who relates stories about the way the roles were cast (she got her part as the teenaged daughter when the actress originally chosen gained ten pounds while vacationing for the summer), and the way they worked and related to each other. It turns out that Brian Keith's and Sebastian Cabot's real-life demeanors and approaches to acting were reflected in their roles; Keith was the freewheeling man's man with a devil-may-care attitude, while Cabot was the meticulous preparer. One has to admire the care that has been taken with this set and the transfers (full-screen, 1.33:1), and the overall production. The programs look great and the documentary is fun as far as it goes. Curiously, we hear a bit more about the background of Johnny Whitaker than any of the other cast members, including Garver herself (whose movie career went back to The Ten Commandments a decade before the series). One can hope, though, that this material is being saved up for a supplement on one of the volumes devoted to another season of the show.

Barnes & Noble
A forerunner in accidental-family subgenre of situation comedies, Family Affair cast veteran actor Brian Keith as Bill Davis, a successful engineer, world traveler, and bachelor who loses his brother and sister-in-law in an accident. In an instant, be becomes father to their three children -- 15-year-old Cissy (Kathy Garver) and 6-year-old twins Jody (Johnny Whitaker) and Buffy (Anissa Jones) -- as well as Buffy's doll, the iconic Mrs. Beasley. Equally iconic is Sebastian Cabot in the role of Davis's fussy butler, Mr. (Giles) French, who now has to care for three kids in addition to his employer. While resistant at first, both Davis and French eventually come to adore the children and form a tight-knit family. TV trivia fans will note that this first season includes John Williams's nine-episode run substituting as Mr. (Nigel) French, filling in for his brother Giles as butler -- an expedient necessitated by Cabot's sudden, temporary illness. Remembered mainly as a sweet-natured diversion that lived up to its name, Family Affair also dealt, on occasion, with the children's longing for their lost parents. The first of the 30 episodes included in this Season 1 set debuted September 12, 1966, on CBS, in the Monday night slot after The Andy Griffith Show. It proved a hit straightaway, ranking among that year's top 20 shows. This five-disc set includes a production stills gallery as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the show with the adult Garver.

This DVD truly is for the family. It does delight young audiences of today as well as the old folks who grew up watching the show. There was true warmth in this family. The simple story lines had lessons to be learned about being a good, truthful person and they are just as valuable today. Watching this first season, you forget how young the 3 kids were when the series first started. Also, the unforgetable Mrs Beasley looks a little different in the beginning. The bonus tracks feature some insightful interviews with Kathy Garver, "Sissy". I highly recommend this DVD as the comedy, warmth, love and message is timeless.

I loved this show as a kid and after watching this first season I'm reminded why.it touches the heart! there's not one episode that didn't give me a smile and a lump in my throat.you get the feeling the actors really cared about each other. Brian Kieth,I wished he was my uncle/father! Sabastian Cabot was pompas but loving! Kathy Garver was the perfect big sister.Johnny Whiticker(sic?)was the cutest kid ever and Anissa Jones just made you want to take care of her. this was a wonderful show 40 years ago and it's wonderful today.I only wish the stars lives had turned out as happy as their characters.
