Fanny Trilogy

Overview

No self-made education of the whats and wherefores of cinema history is worth its own reddened corneas without an acquaintance with this famous but long-unavailable troika from Provençal playwright/filmmaker/solipsist Marcel Pagnol. Passionate only about his fictional characters and their propensity for mad, energetic, visceral conversation, Pagnol had no use for movies until sound arrived, and then saw it only as useful for documenting, sans "style," his stagecraft.

As André Bazin maintained, one look at the films belies Pagnol's ambition; their visual simplicity survives as unpretentious eloquence, their absolute focus on people is clearly humanist, if raw and largely unmediated by the filmmaker's presence. They are to Renoir's films from the 1930s what Gaugin was to Monet. In toto, Marius (1931), Fanny (1932), and César (1936) comprise one long love story set on the Marseilles waterfront, between disgruntled bar-owner's son Marius (Pierre Fresnay) and fishmonger's daughter Fanny (Orane Demazis). But in fact, the movies are larger than that, manifesting an entire community of screwballs, lovable louts, nouveaux riches jackasses, splenetic matriarchs, hangers-on, and gossipers, at such patient length and with such forgiving ardor that after spending over six hours with them, you feel as if you've ended an entire summer vacation you were thinking should last forever. The Kino box set is a treasure: besides capturing the three films (the first directed by a young Alexander Korda, the second by Marc Allégret, and the third by Pagnol himself, although all three were firmly controlled by Pagnol's specifications) in a better, clearer form than anyone's seen since their initial releases, a fourth disc comes loaded with historical context, including a brand-new feature-length documentary about la trilogie, original trailers, audio commentary for all three films by Pagnol himself (taken from radio interviews), promotional effluvia, and an essay by director/French cinephile Bertrand Tavernier.
