Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
This second Tom Cruise/Nicole Kidman co-starrer, made in-between 1990's Days of Thunder and 1999's Eyes Wide Shut, is a stylish romantic epic. Director Ron Howard captures pastoral Ireland and the untamed American West with stunning appeal. The love story is well-constructed and well-fleshed out, and showcases some fairly dynamic chemistry between the husband-and-wife team. Sporting a fairly authentic Irish accent, Cruise is remarkably understated, and Kidman plays off of him adequately. Despite the solid acting, the film's visuals are clearly its strong suit: Howard demonstrates a well-trained eye for backdrops, and Mikael Salomon's cinematography enthralls. Though the script gets bogged down slightly in the middle and lacks some substance, this dramatic period piece is a decent, folkloric snapshot of immigrant Americana.

I really really loved this movie. Although I've come to not think very much of Tom Cruise he showed his talent in this movie. Nicole Kidman, as usual was wonderful and beautiful, feisty and i loved it. The movie was really touching and It made me laugh and cry. I would truly recommend it.

This film is excellent. I cannot figure out film critics - they don't understand that the audience is looking for "entertainment", not "messages" all the time! But beside "that" point. This film about the Irish coming to America in the late 1800's and settling down in Oklahoma is "grand". Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman are perfect as Joseph and Shannon. There is a "STORY" being "told" in this film!!! It's about the courage it takes to pursue your dreams of owning your own "home"(being in America) and doing what you can to fulfill that dream. Love plays a big part in this story. "lOVE" is the "thread" that pulls people together. And in working together, men and women can achieve their ultimate goal(whatever it is) in their lives.!!! Many comments have been made about Tom Cruise as a person. I personally believe Tom is doing the best that he can with his life. And Nicole is finally happy herself. Let these two young people keep doing what they were meant to do - and that is to keep us(as an audience) highly "entertained", in these difficult economic times!!!
