Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
ADV Films' latest Farscape box set collects the first four episodes of Season 3 -- an exemplary group that exhibits all the outstanding qualities that have made this series one of the most successful genre offerings on television. The opener, "Season of Death," finds former astronaut John Crichton (played by series star Ben Browder) still at the mercy of the malevolent Scorpius in a lab on the Ice Planet. Reeling from the apparent loss of his friend, Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black), Crichton feels that he has no reason to live, but his comrades on the living spaceship Moya believe otherwise and act accordingly. The sequel episodes, "Sons and Lovers" and the two-part "Self Inflicted Wounds," see the crew members reunited, only to find Moya imperiled by a mysterious ailment contracted somewhere in a series of wormholes perforating the galaxy. From the beginning, Farscape has eschewed the hidebound conventions of science-fiction dramas in favor of fanciful, innovative concepts, and this characteristic is very much in evidence here, in episodes written by Richard Manning, Justin Monjo, and David Kemper. As always, the prosthetics and alien life forms designed by Jim Henson's Creature Shop are of feature-film quality, as are the other special effects. In a few short years, Farscape has become one of TV's most compelling hours, and you'll know why after watching these first-rate episodes. The two-disc DVD box includes a commentary by costar Claudia Black, who is interviewed along with fellow cast member Paul Goddard ("Stark") in a behind-the-scenes profile. Additionally, the DVD set features deleted scenes, updated character histories, and galleries that show sets, props, and costumes designed for the show.
