Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Richard Gilliam
Father Goose is a favorite of Cary Grant fans, even though it indicates his limitations as an actor: he rarely stops being his usual charming and sophisticated self to transform into Walter Eckland, drunk and loner. The film, though, is a audience pleaser, thanks significantly to the Oscar-winning screenplay by S.H. Barnett, Peter Stone, and Frank Tarloff, which expertly exploits the humor inherent in the school marm-versus-reprobate plot. What works about the film is the chemistry between Grant and co-star Leslie Caron. The film has a nice, pleasant look, thanks largely to the cinematography of Charles Lang and the work of director Ralph Nelson, who seems to grasp the lack of seriousness of the material.

    Good Movie

This is an all around good family movie. It is worth watching at least once. Cary Grant is wonderful as a gruffy man that likes his booze. The comedy will keep you laughing and wondering what will happen next. Including a snake bite scare.

    Adrift

Another classic movie with Cary Grant. If you are into Mr. Grant, this will be another delightful DVD to view. LOL moments occur when Cary Grant as a WW II drifter finds some lovely creations in the sea, and not just the usual sea life he was expecting to see through his binoculars. The fun begins as he tries to "live" with the unexpected "visitors." Great entertainment.

    Released 1964 / Born 197?

Yes, that's right, the movie is much older than I am; however, I find it not only entertaining but a wonderful piece of cinema! I first saw this movie on an A&E type special and always wondered 'what was that movie I saw?' I am confident that you and yours will find Father Goose to be a wonderful addition to your library.

    A True Time Classic

This movie is one that I would reccommend for the whole family. In today's society, we often go for the high tech shows, but this show offers the viewers a chance to actually leave the movie with a warm feeling.
It shows how any person over time can change...and for the better. Watch it and you'll agree.

This is one of our favorite Cary Grant films. Funny, sweet, charming and great for the whole family -- a great way to introduce a classic film.

Grant the beachcomber hermit and Caron the straight-lace schoolteacher bring their gifts and charm to a routine story.

The better of Grant's last two films, Father Goose gets lots of mileage out of a strong cast (Grant, Howard and Caron) struggling with a routine script. Refreshing to see Grant rumpled and unshaven, getting the most out of every line. Widescreen cinematography is impressive, but overall it just serves to remind us of Grant's long career and well-earned reputation for making comedy, charm and style look so effortless.

    Father Goose

Gary Grant at his best makes this a good movie to watch on a rainy day. Leslie Caron's character is played with great gusto, conviction and maybe some personal experience. The children bring it all together to make this film a funny and lighthearted movie.

They can't make movies like this anymore...

My father was just a little kid when this movie first came out but it's still, hands down, his favorite movie. I grew up watching it on tape and in my opinion no other movie can measure up to this one. It's a shame that most kids my age (17) can't appreciate classics such as this. This will allways be (thanks to my father:) my favorite movie, no matter how many good ones I see. They just can't make movies like this anymore.
