Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
This five-volume DVD set collects a quintet of Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular operas --HMS Pinafore, The Mikado, The Pirates of Penzance, The Gondoliers, and Patience. Offered for the first time on DVD, the productions are backed by the London Symphony Orchestra and star such greats as Keith Mitchell, Joel Grey, and Vincent Price. Supplemental features include "making-of" featurettes with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with cast and crew, revealing such tidbits as the fact that it took 24 gallons of tea per day to slake the Penzance crew's thirst. With more than nine hours of operatic splendor, it's a G&S fan's dream.

    G&S deserve better

I am a G&S fan, and frankly, this is not my dream. The Brent Walker videos are a big part of the little we Savoyards have in the way of G&S recordings. Unfortunately. They are decent in spite of themselves; nevertheless, I will continue to cringe at Peter Allen's pitiful pirate king and William Conrad's mikado. A distinguishing feature of these recordings is the unevenness of the casting; we have Anne Collins, a brilliant Katisha, against Conrad's Mikado, and D'Oyly Carte great Gillian Knight against Peter Allen in Penzance. In Pinafore, for example, we have an exemplory Little Buttercup and (I thought) an excellent Dick Deadeye, cast beside a hopeless Captain Corocoran and a Sir Joseph who does not sing but recites what words he can remember (which are few). Besides this, the sets are very cheap and the acting is exaggerated. We tend to get used to overacting in G&S but I still think that these operas are worthy of a Bunthorne who could sing more and mug less than the Brent Walker Bunthorne. As I have said, however, this is almost all we have in the way of traditional G&S. Luckily, all the songs are sung in this collection except for the second verse of Antonio's song in 'Gondoliers.' Overall, in spite of its iniquities, this collection can be enjoyed. My little sister grew quite fond of them when I showed them to her. The Gondoliers is the best; Penzance and the Mikado are good too notwithstanding the aforementioned leads. Iolanthe I enjoyed least; they were very wild in their interpretation of it, and used 80's technology that just looks stupid now. Patience is redeemed by Anne Collins' Lady Jane - 'Sad is that Woman's Lot' is brilliant. Anne Collins plays the contralto in each except for Pinafore and Penzance, so you can expect a good performance on her part. The Gondoliers has excellent casting mostly, expecially for Tessa - what a voice! So now that I have all my complaints done with, I can say that if you have small children who should be watching G&S, start here; if you want to convert someone grown to G&S, this is really the last place you should go.
