Ferris Bueller's Day Off

( 40 )

Overview

One of the perennial teenage films of the 1980s, Ferris Bueller's Day Off inspired dozens of films, made stars out of Charlie Sheen, Jennifer Grey, and Ben Stein, and even influenced a rock band (Save Ferris). Besides The Breakfast Club, John Hughes will undoubtedly be remembered for this classic piece of filmmaking. That's why the commentary with writer/director John Hughes on the disc makes it so appealing. Besides The Breakfast Club, John Hughes will undoubtedly be remembered for this classic piece of filmmaking. That's why the commentary with writer/director John Hughes on the disc makes it so appealing. Hughes is incredibly informative and insightful and gives away every casting secret anyone ever had about the making of the film. He's one of the more articulate directors to do commentary of a film. The downside to this disc, unfortunately, is that it is not a new film transfer. Sporadic dirt can be seen in the widescreen frames, though it's not too offensive and won't detract from viewing pleasure. The audio is excellent -- offered in Dolby Surround, 5.1 Surround, and French-language. There are also English subtitles for the hearing impaired. The most glaring omission on this disc is the lack of a theatrical trailer, which seems like a standard extra. Overall, however, the commentary more than makes up for any weaker aspects of the disc.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Before graduating to more adult-oriented films, writer-director John Hughes capped his high school quartet with this 1986 comedy that, like Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, has become an era-defining touchstone. But new generations can join the all-inclusive legions of sportos, motorheads, geeks, bloods, wasteoids, and dweebies who consider eight-time truant Ferris Bueller “a righterous dude.” Who cannot relate to such teenage logic as Ferris’s rationalization of day off No. 9: “How can I possibly be expected to handle school on a day like this?” Substitute the word “job” for “school” and you can understand why this liberating comedy continues to strike a chord. As Bueller famously observes, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around, you could miss it.” Matthew Broderick’s immense likability goes a long way toward saving Ferris from coming off as an obnoxious spoiled brat, or, to quote Rooney Jeffrey Jones, the dean of students determined to catch Bueller, “a snot-nosed punk.” The film’s many classic scenes still make the grade, including Ben Stein’s career-launching “Bueller?...Bueller?...Bueller?”; the “Sausage King”; and Ferris’s parade rendition of “Twist and Shout.” But what puts this edition in a class by itself are the new bonus features, including the nearly half-hour-long “Getting the Class Together,” featuring new and archival interviews with Hughes, Broderick, Stein, and the rest of the lightning-in-a-bottle ensemble, including Jennifer Gray as Ferris’s resentful younger sister, Alan Ruck as Ferris’s neurotic best friend, Cameron, Mia Sara as Ferris’s girlfriend, Sloane, and Edie McClurg as Rooney’s secretary. Subtract half a grade for the exclusion of Hughes’s audio commentary, which was included on the 1999 DVD.
All Movie Guide
If the mention of Ferris Bueller's Day Off doesn't call to mind late-night slumber parties with the VCR and the realization that you, too, would have sold your soul to sing "Twist and Shout" to the accompaniment of a marching band, then you're probably not of the era that grew up venerating John Hughes' films. This is one of the director's best efforts, and as a result, the film enjoys the immortality that comes with being part of a generation's collective consciousness. Beyond Bueller's cult status lies a movie that is goofy and slapstick, but also endearingly sweet and even philosophical. Matthew Broderick imbues Ferris with the just the right level of smirky, confident, collar-up attitude for 1980s teenage fantasy. There are effortless, enthusiastic turns from the supporting players as well, with Jeffrey Jones shining particularly in the enviable role of the over-zealous high-school principal Ed Rooney. Even the tinier roles are memorable: look for great cameos from Ben Stein and Charlie Sheen. Hughes makes up for some mid-movie flatness with a riotous final sequence (make sure you stay through the credits). As with Hughes' other masterpiece, The Breakfast Club, there are broader themes regarding status, friendship, authority, and emotional neglect that will resonate with anyone who's found himself or herself in that void between childhood and adulthood called "high school."

The movie is great, the special features... not so great.

This is not the version you want if you want the loads of special features. You should try the other version and not the I love 80s version. Unless of course... you want the CD that comes with it. *shrugs* Up to you guys.

Take a day off with Ferris

This movie is surely one of the funniest of the 1980s, a wonderful salute to those years just before we all have to become seriously responsible and grown up. Everybody has got to wish he has at least a little of the Ferris Bueller spirit in him. The scene with the idling car (I won't give it away) is absolutely unforgettable.

The best movie on on the subject skipping school.

This has been my favorite movie since I was 5!I saw my parents watching something downstairs. I went to see what it was. As I watched the movie, I grew bored. Then I went to loving it. I purchased this tape on my birthday at the age of 5 and a half. I watch it almost every night and when friends come over, they watch it too. I highly recomend this movie for people of the ages 5 and up. Note to the parents: they say a particular curse very often. Not a really bad one though.
