Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Robert Firsching
This enjoyable farce is the second pairing of the cast of A Fish Called Wanda (1988). John Cleese is funnier than usual as the officious director of a failing foreign zoo, and the exotic wildlife on display will appeal to many viewers. Although the humor is uneven, certain scenes are hilarious, such as the sequence in which underwear-clad Kevin Kline is forced to hide quietly in a closet with a very large spider. Amiably goofy, although at times too cutesy for its own good, Fierce Creatures might please older audiences more than their hipper offspring.

    Pan and Scan!

I love this movie- it is often compared unfavorably to a Fish Called Wanda, and it's true that this is not as good, but what is? On it's own terms, it's a wonderfully funny farce, well constructed and well acted.

However- this release is in the full frame 1:33 aspect ratio, and the movie was filmed in the extreme widescreen 2:35 aspect ratio- meaning that in every shot, you're only seeing half of what you are supposed to. It destroys the movie, and it's pretty absurd in an era where most people's TVs will stretch the image out horizontally anyway.

You can get this movie from the UK in the correct aspect ratio- though that DVD is not anamorphic, meaning that it will be surrounded by black bars on all four sides on a widescreen TV. Shamefully, to the best of my knowledge, there is no way to get this movie that will be any better than that.
