Package Description: "This Collector's Edition set includes four films that characterize the meaning of "Film Noir." Literally meaning "Black Film," the term was coined by French critics in the 1940s. It is a type of American crime film that highlights cynical leads, seedy underworld characters, and a bleak, pessimistic view of humanity. Noir's protagonists were mostly men, consumed by their past and driven to repeat their mistakes, generally at the behest of a femme fatale who attempts to drive them to extortion, murder, and ultimate ruin. Disc One: Impact USA 1949 83 Min B&W Walter Williams' (Brian Donlevy) two -timing wife and her lover scheme to kill him in an "accidental" car crash. The plan fails, and Williams survives the accident while her lover is killed. Williams stumbles into a small town and takes on a new identity where nobody knows him. He starts life over again and falls in love with his boss, Marsha (Ella Raines). Disaster looms when he returns to San Francisco, and is charged with the lover's murder. Strange Illusion USA 1945 87 Min. B&W Paul (Jimmy Lydon) has nightmares in which his dead father warns him of a dangerous stranger. Through the help of a psychiatrist (Regis Toomey), Paul realizes that his dreams are coming true, and that Brett Curtis (Warren William), the man his mother is about to marry, is actually a homicidal maniac who lives as an outpatient in a sanitarium. This film is a creepy nail biting psychodrama from the talented director Edgar G. Ulmer. Disc Two: Detour USA 1946 67 Min. B&W Al Roberts (Tom Neal) accepts a ride to Hollywood from a sleazy gambler, Charles Haskell Jr. (Edmund MacDonald), in the hopes of meeting his girlfriend Sue. When Haskell suffers a fatal heart attack on the way, Roberts decides to dispose of the body and take on the man's identity. Roberts poses as Haskell so that he can collect a legacy from Haskell's millionaire father, who hasn't seen his son in years. A Cult Classic! Scarlett Street USA 1945 95 Min. B&W Edward G. Robinson stars as Christopher Cross, a lonely desperate man who is married to a nagging wife. Life takes an unexpected twist when Cross rescues Kitty (Joan Bennett) from her abusive boyfriend. Then he is manipulated into embezzling money from his employer to pay for his new expensive life-style. A bleak film, masterfully directed by Fritz Lang, in which an ordinary man succombs first to vice and then to murder."
