Eastwood plays Mitchell Gant, a past-his-prime U.S. pilot, smuggled into the Soviet Union to steal a new Russian supersonic fighting plane. Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
This oft-overlooked spy thriller was not a hit for Clint Eastwood but it is one of his most interesting efforts from the early 1980's. Firefox benefits from an intricate script that blends genres and offers unique twists on familiar elements. For example, the story's espionage angle is given an added edge by the fact that Eastwood's character is a pilot sent in on a rushed mission and not a trained spy: as a result, his mistakes and the fear he feels in unfamiliar surroundings enhance the suspense of his mission. Eastwood does well in the director's chair, orchestrating the many suspense sequences in an effective, low-key style that eschews action in favor of carefully-built tension. He also deploys some large-scale visual effects by John Dykstra in an impressive manner during the jet-driven finale. The character of Mitchell Gant stretches Eastwood out of his comfort zone as an actor -- the character's flashback scenes require a level of Method-acting intensity that Eastwood never quite summons up -- but he does a solid job of portraying Gant's quiet fear and paranoia on the mission. His work in this area is aided immensely by excellent support performances from Freddie Jones as a dryly humorous British intelligence agent and Warren Clarke as a stern but brave Russian operative who helps Eastwood behind enemy lines. To sum up, Firefox is a much better film that its reputation suggests and well worth the time for spy movie fans and Eastwood aficionados alike.

    Cool Movie!

Clint Eastwood is a personal fav actor/director of mine. I've seen a good majority of his movies. When watching this one recently, it seemed to me like it was one I'd seen at least part of once upon a time, because parts of it seemed somewhat familiar to me, but I couldn't quite place whether I'd seen the whole thing or not. If I had, it was probably when I was a kid. Regardless, for it's time, I thought this was a very cool movie. Eastwood both acts and directs in this one...and does a dang fine job of it too, I might add. This is a pretty awesome action movie for starters, but it also plays out a lot like a secret agent movie, in the sense that he has to sneak into Russian under different aliases, meet up with certain contacts, and eventually penetrate a Russian base to steal a secret aircraft. Some of it was pretty intense. There were several supporting actors, too, that I have not seen in a whole lot before that I recall, but I knew them very well from roles in movies like Star Wars, Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The whole cast did pretty well in this, and it was very enjoyable. If you are into action & suspense, then definitely check this one out if you have never seen it!

    Cool Movie!

I'm pretty sure I rememeber seeing part or most all of this movie with my dad when I was younger, because I seemed to remember some parts in the back of my mind. Regardless, I decided I should see it again and borrowed it from my dad, who purchased it on DVD recently. Clint Eastwood is definitely a personal favorite actor-director of mine, and he both directed and starred in this one. Anything he directs or stars in is usually pretty darn good, and this one was no exception. For it's time, this was a pretty well made movie...and it's pretty intense in a few parts. It really has a secret agent sort of feel to it, considering he has to sneak into Russia under certain aliases and meet with certain contacts in order to avoid suspicion and get in to steal the secret aircraft. There were several supporting actors in this whom I recognized from other great movies, such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Who Framed Roger Rabbits...actors that I haven't seen many other places, but knew well from the numerous times I'd watched those other titles. All in all though, I thought this was a really cool movie, and it's a shame I don't have more Clint Eastwood movies, as much as I like the guy as an actor/director. However, I think soon I will probably purchase his 35 years collection. That's got most all of his greatest movies in it...would be worth the money I think. If you are into action & suspense, this is a classic...and I would highly recommend checking it out!

    supersonic

I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in a story of twisted loyalties.A mark for just how far people are willing to go to get what they want.Shows how small one is when compared to the larger picture.
