Overview

A heroic fireman locked in a failing marriage accepts his father's challenge to take part in a 40-day experiment designed to teach both husband and wife the true meaning of commitment in this faith-based marriage drama starring Kirk Cameron and Erin Bethea. When he's battling blazes, Capt. Caleb Holt (Cameron) adheres to the old firefighter's adage about never leaving your partner behind; back at home, it's an altogether different story. Caleb and his wife Catherine (Bethea) have been married for seven years, but lately arguments over career, housework, finances, and outside interests have driven the once-happy couple hopelessly apart. Just as Caleb and Catherine prepare to officially dissolve their marriage, Caleb's father John (Harris Malcolm) presents his son with a most unusual challenge: commit to a 40-day experiment called "The Love Dare," and take one last shot at saving his marriage. While at first Caleb agrees to take a chance on "The Love Dare," the discovery that it's closely tied in with his parent's newfound faith causes him to momentarily reconsider. Still, Caleb carries on with the experiment despite being constantly rejected by his skeptical, embittered wife. When Caleb asks his father how he can be expected to love someone who refuses to give him a fair chance, John tells his son that this is precisely the same love that God shows for humankind. Now, with a little help from above, the man who makes headlines for saving lives will fight to be a hero to the one person who matters most -- his wife.

All Movie Guide
The veteran of three Rapture-themed Left Behind movies, Kirk Cameron again does the good work of the Lord in Fireproof, an earnest and slightly less godly manual on how to save your failing marriage. Cameron's faith has dominated his career for awhile now, but the difference this time is the approach. Cameron and writer-director-producer-editor Alex Kendrick use neither fire nor brimstone in promoting their godly path. Actually, the role of the Lord is relatively limited in the 40-day "love dare," a guide used by Cameron's Georgia firefighter to salvage a marriage that's quickly headed for divorce. Appearances of Christian vocabulary like "God" and "savior" will squarely remind viewers of the agenda of Provident Films/Sherwood Pictures (makers of Facing the Giants), but Fireproof manages to focus on these characters' relationship to each other more than their relationship to Christ. It's a competent production that has room for both big set pieces (several daring rescues) and some pretty self-effacing humor (two firefighters chug a hot sauce called Wrath of God). Since Cameron is about the only Hollywood veteran here, it would be no surprise if the acting were deficient, but that's not really the case. Especially impressive is Erin Bethea as the disenchanted wife. The pretty actress doesn't have much screen experience and was originally slated for a nonspeaking role, but she combines with Cameron to inject their scenes with true emotion -- some of which spreads (like a fire, one might say) to the audience. Fireproof can't be expected to exceed that fringe quality shared by most Christian movies, but it did amass an impressive 33 million dollars at the box office. More importantly, its religious message doesn't prevent it from remembering how to be a movie. It has a satisfying dramatic arc and enough humor to balance out its more reverential moments.

Yes, the acting was amateurish. There is only one "professional" actor in the movie. But the message that was put forth in this film transcends any stylish acting, special effects, music soundtracks or Hollywood hype. Being a former civil servant, I truly related to Caleb. Just like a great sermon, this film felt like it was talking to me, like the Kendricks looked into my life and put it on film. The fact that this film was made for less than 1/10th the cost of other Hollywood trash and it remained in theaters for as long as it did, and made the kind of money that it did, and is (as of 2/26/09) the sixth best selling DVD on B&N, is truly a testament to the strength and power that Christianity still has in this great country of ours.

I watched this with my wife and two other couples. We all went away quite emotional. I think most men will be able to relate to this movie and how they view their marriage.

Kirk Cameron's performance was quite riveting although don't expect Oscar type acting.

This movie was fabulous. The TV and movie industy often portray immorality as acceptable, as well as promoting selfishness. Marriage is a commitment, and like anything worthwhile requires dedication and hard work. It is particularly difficult in our times to preserve the sacredness of marriage. Persevering through the tough times, always strengthens the bond. This is a great movie for young and old couples. It's also great for young adults. The movie reminds us that marriage is a covenant. It demonstrates the beauty of unconditional love. This movie is inspirational & uplifting...definitely a movie for couples to see together...it's much more meaningful. Whether your marriage is wonderfully fulfilling or suffering, make it a point to see this movie. "Never leave your partner behind."

My Parents got me this movie as a birthday gift & I enjoyed it. The script was great & the story line has helped couples recover their marriage. I highly recommend this movie to couples who are married & those who are in a serious dating relationship.

This movie is great! although the acting is somewhat cheesy at times, the message is clear. Often people forget or just don't understand the vows they say when they wed. This movie does a great job showing both sides to marital problems, how selfish each spouse can be, and how powerful the Faith in our Lord can be. This movie also makes reference to some inspiring scriptures from the new testament. One awesome scripture (James 1:19) mentioned in Fireproof helps me to control my temper and be more patient with my wife. Each day is a gift, so love your husband or wife like its your last!

This movie is on target. Although this movie is faith based the message is applicable for all married couples. Most marriages fail because of misunderstandings due to our poor communication skills.

Wonderfully inspirational and thought-provoking for any adult, young and old, whether thinking about marriage or already married. Teaches not only respect towards one's partner but self-respect as well. The movie focuses on Christian love and respect, and teaches that divorce isn't always the answer. It portrays where the focus should be: placing one's relationship in God's perfect hands, not our own faulty ones. I highly recommend this movie for anyone even remotely thinking about divorce or already in the process, and even for couples in a healthy relationship. I was reluctant to watch it just because I was at the point where I couldn't stand my husband and I actually didn't want my marriage to improve. I was actually scared to watch it just because there was a chance my marriage would improve after viewing it (which is absurd, I know, but hey, sometimes you get so fed up with things that you just don't want to put any energy into it anymore. That's where I was). I knew that I had no more energy, I was ready to give up, but instead, I needed to give it up to God - just like Kirk Cameron's character in the movie. I talked to God about my husband and told him this when I was at my wits end and quite frustrated and hurt, "Okay, you created him - he's yours. I can't change him - only YOU can. Please, either change me or change him or take him out of my life. I give him and my marriage to You!" And what do you know? He changed us both (but mostly him <grin>). Maybe that's not the path God would lead you to, but the bottom line is, this movie could be the tool to teach you where to place your priorities or at least give you another option, then God will make the tough decisions for you. All you have to do is follow His lead.

The world needs more movies like this one. It has a meaningful plot, characters you cry and root for, comic relief, and a message to be told. Granted, it does not have the flair of a Hollywood film, but Hollywood films do not have the essence that this film has. I cried throughout the movie. It may seem sappy, but so many people in our world today live the lives these people portrayed. This movie tells truths, where Hollywood feeds us lies. A must see for the whole family.

A stunning movie that will shake the way you look at marriage in today's "modern society", where divorce is the prevalent, primary option. Anyone who is married and thinks they are "giving" more than they are "getting" or feels like there is no use in trying to save their marriage if the other partner has given up will be inspired by this movie. Singles can learn a lot from this movie as well. Kirk Cameron does a phenomenal job portraying the husband. The movie is very believable. This is a great movie to sit down with your spouse and watch. Also great movie to watch and discuss with your young adult children. You will find yourself passing this movie around to your friends.

My husband and I went to watch this movie when it first came to theatres. We enjoyed the movie so much, we recommended it to our son and daughter in law. they went and said it was the best movie they have ever watched. It's a movie that brings you back to what is important in a marriage. Respect, love, trust, and most important of all....God. It's also very refreshing to go to the movies and walk out feeling "Good". When the movie ended, almost everyone was clapping.

I watched this movie with my husband, and i was really happy that someone decides to do a movie like this one. This is real life, the movie depicits that if God is not the center of our lives, then our marriages will fail. I watched it over and over and over again and I cried. I really wanted my relationship to work and i know that every relationship has their challenges and I found myself asking God to teach me to be a good wife and help our relationship that God will be exalted in our lives. We recommend the movies to all our friends especially those that are married and expects to get married. I think alot of married couples need to get a hold of this movie! God bless!!!!!!!

This statement is from the DVD and it speaks volumes, quote: "You never leave your partner behind." Is your marriage fireproof? This is a profound question that each married couple should consider. *This DVD mentions many of the facets/dimensions of a marriage. *Great for those thinking about marriage. *Draws you in. *Emotional. *This is a quality marriage/relationship DVD on lessons of love, listening, and caring for your marriage partner. *Offers insightful advice. *Do a house, a car, and/or a nice employment position determine that a couple will have a good marriage? How does all this hold up when it is gone? These are just some questions to ponder. *This DVD offers quality advice to strengthen a marriage. Also the DVD "Not Easily Broken," is good to watch.

This has been the best movie so far in years. This movie was done by a church with actors that didn't have experience but were actually very good. I reccommend that every teenager, dating couple, husband, wife, etc. should watch this movie. It actually has a purpose and meaningful message; and tells the story of a couple that is facing the possiblity about getting a divorice and are having problems with their marriage. Caleb's father asks him to do this "love dare" and wait 40 days before he files a divorice. At first Caleb's heart isn't in it but then he learns that in order to love his wife he must have God in his life. He learns that he needs God to show him how to love his wife and treat her right. Because he can't give her love if he doesn't have God's love. "Never leave your partner behind..."

Around Valentines Day I was at Banner Books, Bibles, Christian literature, books, cards and gifts. There was a huge display of this video called FireProof and the companion book called the Love Dare. And I bought it. Buy or Rent this movie...you won't be sorry It has been said that if your marriage is in trouble this is the movie to watch. I say if your relationships are in trouble, marriage, friendship, family-ship, mankind-ship, most of all your relationship with God...this is the movie to buy.

This was one of the best surprises of the year. Every single or married couple should watch this. I believe this was written by the star Kirt Cameron and the proceeds go to his congregation. This IS NOT a religion movie; it is a spiritual movie. Very moving, spirtual, emotional and funny. Buy it, share it with your loved ones and friends. 5 Star

My husband and I love this book. It has helped us make our relationship better and also brought us closer to the Lord. I have suggested this book to many friends and family members and they have loved it too. It is one of the most inspirational readings I have ever read. I know this book is a keeper forever. I highly recommend getting the movie too. The movie has such wonderful wisdom that you can take with you.

Fireproof is the third movie produced by Sherwood Baptist Church, namely Alex and Stephen Kendrick. Caleb Holt is a fireman who rescues anyone trapped in a fire, but he seems incapable of rescuing his wife's heart. After seven years together, his marriage is falling appart. When Caleb is asked by his father to try the Love Dare, Caleb agrees and in the process, discovers from God what true love really is. Kirk Cameron plays Caleb Holt and is the only professional actor in this movie. Since other parts are played by non-professionals, I consider the acting to be first rate. Sure, the production quality is not great by Hollywood standards, nor does it have the hype. But Hollywood doesn't want to put out good movies that uplift and inspire, and this movie definitely inspires people to learn about the greatest love that exists -- God's love for us through his Son Jesus Christ. It's very uplifting and I thank Alex Kendrick for wanting to produce this movie about marriage. P.S. Some of the non-professional actors in this movie were in Facing the Giants also. Consider Jason McLeod, who played Eric, the rookie fireman in Fireproof. He also played Brock, who did the famous 100-yard Death Crawl in the Facing the Giants.

Inspiring story. A pleasure to see a movie created without special effects, nudity or any of the typical Hollywood crapola, but then this is not a Hollywood made movie. This movie is made by an inspired group of volunteers. Non believers will not like this movie but the rest of us love it.

Fireproof is a love story that includes the three most important people in a marriage, the husband, the wife and Jesus Christ. With a solid marriage of 32 years behind my husband and me, it added a boost to our own. Also the movie gave a renewal feeling to my children's 3 year marriage and also gave my soon to be married daughter and her fiancée something special to think about in this high pressure world. It was a great tool for learning and spiritual dialog. The acting was good but it reminded me more of a made for TV movie then a major motion picture. Don't let that stop you from seeing it. I would like to see more movies like it and applauded the producers, actors and all involved for their contributions. Worth every penny.

Every married couple should watch this movie, and share it with their cherished loved ones and dear friends who are married. Very touching, realistic, and memorable. I've already been sharing with my friends, and our church had a special showing of it several weeks ago to all who wanted to see it.

This is a Wonderful movie!! I have just ordered the book "Love Dare" so that I can work on myself and work on my marriage. The world needs movies and books about real life situations that so many people encounter in their lives. This movie is even better, it teaches us how to find the solution to all problems, God.
