Stanfield oversees security for Landrock, and has made sure that their online banking services are the best-protected in the world, and that the bank's data is safe from hackers and other intruders. However, Stanfield finds out the hard way that his system does indeed have a flaw when he's visited by Bill Cox Paul Bettany, a cold and calculating man who has spent months learning everything there is know about Stanfield and his family. Cox's underlings have taken Stanfield's wife, Beth Virginia Madsen, and their two children hostage, and they inform Jack that they will be released only when he uses his knowledge of the bank's security systems to deposit 100 million dollars in Cox's account in an offshore bank. Stanfield is deeply wary but willing to go along to ensure the safety of his family, but when he has reason to doubt that Cox and his cohorts will live up to their end of the bargain, he swings into action to exact justice against the criminals. Firewall also stars Alan Arkin, Robert Forster, and Mary Lynn Rajskub.

At 63 years old, Harrison Ford still has plenty of Indiana Jones left in him. In fact, his energetic performance helps turn this slightly improbable nail-biter into a convincing, highly entertaining thriller. Ford plays Jack Stanfield, the security expert for a large financial institution that's been targeted for takedown by suave thief Bill Cox (Paul Bettany). To secure Stanfield's cooperation in this high-tech robbery, Cox's men invade Jack's home and hold his wife, Beth (Virginia Madsen) and two children hostage. Director Richard Loncraine (Wimbledon) gives equal weight to the banker's twin challenges: facilitating the theft to save his family and buying time to apprehend the criminals before the police catch up with him. Ford does a crackerjack job of conveying Jack's resourcefulness under pressure, even performing most of his own stunts, including a climactic, bone-crunching fight with Bettany's villain. Ford easily commands the screen, but an unusually strong supporting cast including Robert Patrick, Robert Forster, and Alan Arkin also shine. Loncraine wastes little time on exposition, establishing a crackling pace from the first reel -- a pace sustained successfully throughout the film. Firewall may have the ring of familiarity, but it's solid proof that Ford can still deliver the goods.

    Action Harrison

    Harrison Ford—okay, so he’s older, gray and lined. But he can still put on a great performance. Back that up with Virginia Madsen as his wife and Paul Bettany as the nasty, sociopathic bad guy with an improbable three-man team and you have quite a mix. Ford plays Jack Stanfield, vice president of security at a large Seattle Bank that has just finished installing a new security system that Jack doesn’t seem thrilled with. Enter the bad guy, who forgot to complete his homework and didn’t know about the upgraded system, but kidnaps Jack’s wife, teenage daughter, and asthmatic/peanut allergic son, in the hope of scamming $100 million from the bank. He wants Jack to log into the system, obtain the 10,000 highest depositors, and transfer $10,000 each from their accounts into the robber’s offshore account. Things go awry because of the security upgrade and Jack has to come up with some unbelievable (and if you know anything about technology—impossible) jury-rigging to accomplish the deed. The film switches back and forth between scenarios. The bad guys treat Jack’s family nice one moment and feed the son a cookie with peanuts to induce anaphylactic shock the next—to Jack, constantly under surveillance, trying to figure out how to foil the robbers and getting beat up, then succumbing to carrying out their demands to save his family. And to top it all off, in the end everything is going to point back to Jack, who’s supposed to end up dead, as having been the mastermind behind the theft. Great action and tension—however, the plot is too implausible. The movie ends with a big question mark. Many lost threads that weren’t clarified. Still in all it was entertaining on an amusement level, no cerebral activity required.

    Predictable with a pinch of product placement

    Boring and predictable, much like Harrison Ford's career path. I groaned and moaned throughout this stinker, though Paul Bettany is great as usual. However his sidekicks are stupid, Ford's family is stupid, and Ford himself is slow and aging rapidly as the movie sputters to its end. Don't waste your time.

    Boring

    It was just OK. Couldn't really get into it. As one reviewer said, you seen one Harrison Ford movie, you more or less seen 'em all.

    Outstanding! I don't understand how anyone could not like this!

    This movie rules! I can't understand people when they say, "I didn't like it", or, "it was ok". I mean I loved this when i saw it. The action was great! The plot was great. And overall it just rules! If you wanta see a cool movie see this! I liked it alot better than The Fugitive.

    Whatever

    How many times has Harrison Ford played this exact same role in a movie with this exact same plot? Still, it's a fair movie to pass an evening if nothing more than to see Ford at it AGAIN.
