Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Nathan Southern
This adults-only spoof of the 1930s Flash Gordon serial actually outdoes Mike Hodges' PG-rated Flash Gordon movie on several levels. Though the double-entendres in Flesh are a bit silly (such as the raunchy character names), and such sexual inclusions as a wild orgy and a gay fellatio scene feel overly lewd within the softcore context of the movie, the film succeeds thanks to a witty script, a game cast, and surprisingly competent low-budget special effects. The most memorable fantasy scenes include an animated battle with a massive Hydra-like monster called a Penisaurus that has phalluses for heads, and a terrific claymation sequence obviously inspired by Ray Harryhausen, where Gordon takes on a giant, horny satyr that rampages through the countryside (voiced by an uncredited Craig T. Nelson!). It's obvious that co-directors Bill Osco and Howard Ziehm created the picture on a shoestring, which makes the ingenuity of their visual creations that much more impressive; the filmmakers also exude a great deal of affection for the characters and scenarios. Though not entirely successful, this is still one of the best of the X-rated genre parodies that emerged during the porno chic era - it's miles ahead of Osco's 1976 Alice in Wonderland, The Erotic Adventures of Pinocchio, and the Jaws send-up Gums. As such, it merits a look.

    Awesome B Flick

This is a totally cheesey flick filled with retarded adult humor. Any person into spoofed Sci-Fi movies should enjoy this one. I give it T.I.T.P.O.I.T.S.

    Waste of money and time

Cheap. Stupid. Hokey and not very erotic or interesting. A big waste of money! I saw the movie in a theater in an upscale neighborhood in the early 1970s when X-rated films were still shown in normal theaters. I thought it was one of the most erotic movies I'd seen. Hadn't seen that many to that point. So when I got a gift certificate to BN, I bought the DVD, among other things. It came and I was VERY disappointed. I guess I'd forgotten how bad it was. Extremely bad acting, even by X-movie standards. (Well, maybe not, but ...). Extremely bad 'effects' -- among the worst you'll ever seen anywhere. No beginning film-maker would be caught dead doing such silly models and animations nowadays. It might be a 'classic' in somebody's book. If so, it is a terrific argument for trashing and forgetting such 'classics' forever. Embarrassing. In a word. I barely could sit through it. Kept hoping it would get interesting. Didn't
