Overview

An amiable Cockney rogue seeking out investors in a bid to break big in the silent-film industry finds that building a business out of make believe isn't as easy as he might have thought in this comic yarn about life in the British film industry starring Bob Hoskins and Frances de la Tour. Arnie (Hoskins) longs to make a name for himself in celluloid, but before he finds his way to the silver screen he'll have to seek out some investors first. It's during his tireless search for financing that Arnie becomes locked into a curious romance with prickly entrepreneur Maude (de la Tour). As the unorthodox affair between Arnie and Maude becomes increasingly intimate, the pair struggles to keep the creditors at bay as they satiate the egos of insecure actors and strive to reign in an egotistical director to bring the film in under budget and on time.

    FINALLY!!!

After an interminable wait, finally FLICKERS has made it to DVD! A rare comedy from Masterpiece Theatre, this tale of a down-on-his-luck hustler (the brilliant Bob Hoskins) and the straightlaced woman he marries for mutual convenience (the equally wonderful Frances de la Tour) was wearing out its taped-from-PBS copy I'd made decades ago on VHS. Those who haven't seen FLICKERS before should make a beeline for it--it's a delightful comedy with heart that encompasses a host of memorable characters, includes tons of great scenes and will make you wish for more even after the six hours on these discs. Those who have seen it before--well, I don't have to tell you. Rejoice in the fact that it's back, and overlook the rather skimpy special features (the only behind-the- scenes look is at the guy who did the MUSIC?), because it's enough that this work has been preserved. It looks much better than my faded, flickering (you should pardon the expression) copy. FINALLY!
